Boston Au Pairs visit Harvard University

This is one of my favorite regional events that we offer for our Boston area au pairs:  a Harvard University tour.   Counselor Patti Estabrook organized it this year and almost 100 au pairs showed up on a beautiful fall day.

Au pairs learned about student life and the diversity of one Americas oldest and most prestigious schools.  Tour guides provided historical facts and stories.  Did you know that the statue of John Harvard (which by the way is not John Harvard, but a student who was asked to model, in the absence of any known pictures of John) is the 3rd most photographed statue in the country?

Au Pairs Visit Harvard

Over 80 Boston area au pairs attended the Harvard tour, our September Regional Event.  On a beautiful September day, they came to Cambridge to learn about student life and the diversity of one Americas oldest and most prestigious schools.

Au Pair in America at Harvard University

Each September, Au Pair in America organizes a group tour at Harvard University for its Boston area au pairs.  Yesterday, over 60 au pairs participated on a lovely sunny day.    We split up into two groups, led by Harvard students.

Aside from Harvard’s history, we always learn interesting facts from the tour leaders.  Yesterday we learned that Harvard is the only university which is “needs blind” which means that they will accept students based on their scholarly value no matter how much money they have to contribute to their education.  Harvard will then supplement the rest,  even if it means paying 100%.  We also learned that each dorm on campus reflects the total makeup of the Harvard student population.  So if Harvard has 20% international students, each dorm will have 20% international students.  A true tribute to diversity!

Each month, Au Pair in America offers a regional event to au pairs in the Boston area.  It is another opportunity for our au pairs to connect with others and to learn about American culture.   This month, we offered a free Harvard Tour, led by a Harvard sophomore, Todd.  On a sunny, warm fall day, more than 50 au pairs attended and seemed to enjoy themselves.  Many of the au pairs are attending Harvard Extension School for ESL or other topics, because it is one of the affordable options for au pairs to satisfy their educational requirement.

Todd did an amazing job.  His voice was clear and easy to hear, which is important for au pairs.

He made a sincere effort to keep everybody engaged.

Harvard Tour Regional Event

Each month, local Au Pair in America counselors offer a regional event to all their au pairs in the area.  In September, about 70 au pairs participated in a student-led Harvard tour.  Many of our au pairs study English or other topics at Harvard Extension School and it was interesting for them to find out more about this prestigious university.  Check out the photos at My Cluster Photo Album
