Meet the Counselor
My name is Susan Kalan and I joined Au Pair in America’s team of Community Counselors after my daughter left for college, in November of 2007. Prior to changing my career path to raise my daughter, I worked as an employment counselor for a temporary placement agency; was on the staff of the Pennsylvania Ballet; and worked in a gourmet cheese shop.
My life is continually enriched by the many lovely young women who come to the United States from countries around the world to provide child care, expand their educational horizons and experience life in another culture, and the host families who, embracing the spirit of cultural exchange, welcome their au pairs into their homes and hearts. I possesses a true desire to make a difference in the lives of others and I am grateful for the opportunity to do so through the Au Pair in America program.
In my spare time I love to cook and try out new restaurants. I enjoy going on long walks with my husband around our neighborhood. I have four older stepchildren, two of them have grandchildren — we spend a lot of time with them. The job of community counselor gives me the flexibility to travel with my family — I have great memories from my family adventure trips to the National Parks; Dominica; St. John and most recently, Costa Rica.
