German Au Pair Returns Home After Two Unforgettable Years

We love hearing about the experiences of au pairs and host families at Au Pair in America! We received a touching letter from German au pair Carola, who recently returned home to Germany after spending two years with a host family in Connecticut. Carola reflects on the meaningful bonds formed with her host family and the unforgettable experience of cultural exchange.

German au pair Carola reflects on her two-year journey as an au pair in America below:

“Coming back home three months ago was a big change for me. I had 2 incredible years as an au pair and I will never forget any moment of it.

A big part of my wonderful experience was my incredible host family – for me the best I could ever wish for. Now after 2 years, they are a big part of my life and I can’t describe how much I love and miss them.

The last weeks in America were the best and the hardest at the same time. I was enjoying the time spent with my host family but I also knew I have to leave this wonderful place soon, my second home and all the wonderful people I have met throughout the years.

I had the sweetest and most loving host kids. We shared the same craziness and the love for being active, whether we were running around like crazy on playgrounds, making our own camp activities or playing all kinds of sports for hours.

And guess what – I loved it. I loved to show them the world, to see them grow and to see their wonderful smiles. We learned from each other and every moment with them was precious. They are always in my heart and I will always be there for them.

Now back home, I love to see pictures of them, to hear their stories and to FaceTime with them. Moreover, my host parents are a big part of my wonderful au pair experience. We share the same humor and spent a lot of time together. They were always there for me no matter what and included me in their wonderful family. Everything I want for my host family is a life filled with love and happiness and I hope to see them all again soon.
