Education Options – any accredited post-secondary school

I need ONE of these when you are finished with a class- both your first and second year as an au pair:

– Transcript from institution;

– Letter on school letterhead describing course and dates;

– Completion certificate from institution with name of course and credits;

– Letter from school stating when the course will be completed, if not yet completed by the time extension request is submitted

Education Requirement  Clarification     We are hopeful for a change in the future that will expand educational choices for au pairs.   For now,  the education requirement remains as follows.

Credits    6 semester hours of academic credit at a post-secondary accredited school. (6 credits = approximately 72 hours in the classroom).  Hours and credits are doubled for EduCare companions.  An accredited institution is officially recognized by a regional or national accrediting commission of schools.  If in doubt, check with Allison Malino to find out if a school is accredited.

8 CEUs. These are Continuing Education Credits. One CEU is about 10 hours of class time. Ask your school “is this college credits or Continuing Education?”  Some of the evening and weekend courses will be “Continuing Education”.

Cost  Host families are required to contribute up to $500 (au pair) $1000 (EduCare) for the cost of tuition.

 Transportation    The host family is required to provide transportation, including gasoline, parking, or public transportation costs (if applicable) to and from classes. The cost of transportation is in addition to the $500 (au pair) $1000 (EduCare) for tuition.

UCLA Advantage Course     The University of California at Berkeley  UCLA Advantage class is a 19-week online course for 6 credits that meets the educational requirement for au pairs.  To find out more about the course, please visit UCLA Extension at https://www.uclaextension.edu/aupairs, or contact Allison Malino This is the only online option for au pairs.  Any other online course does not meet the educational requirement.

What is NOT allowed

  • Any online class other than the UCLA Advantage Course
  • Volunteering
  • Any class taken at a non accredited school

Weekend Classes      Each au pair is allowed one weekend class (must be accredited).  The au pair is responsible for transportation and lodging if the class is not local.
