Consider these tips:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/12\/1-hanukkah.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-381 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2015\/12\/1-hanukkah-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif;font-size: medium\"><b>Missing Home<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">Certain people and places are missed and our traditions and activities seem \u201cdifferent\u201d right at a<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">time when an Au Pair would welcome something familiar.\u00a0My observation has been that an Au<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">Pair\u2019s emotions are close to the surface during the holidays.\u00a0The enormity of this year away from<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">home hits her and sometimes throws her into a self-protective mode.\u00a0You can help her through<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">this unfamiliar territory by talking to her about what your specific family activities will be (when<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">the candles will be lit, the stockings hung, the gifts exchanged, the meals prepared and eaten, the<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">relatives arriving, etc.)\u00a0An especially thoughtful touch is to ask her if she has any favorite holiday foods or<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">traditions that\u00a0could be incorporated into your celebration.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>What are your expectations?\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2018\/11\/santa.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-546\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2018\/11\/santa-300x147.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">Talk to your Au Pair specifically about what has to be accomplished and get her involvement and<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">interest.\u00a0Remember her mother has probably taken this responsibility in previous years so don\u2019t expect her to<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">just \u201cknow\u201d what needs to be done. Give her some clear, agreed-upon assignments, make her feel a part of<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">things and let her know her contribution is needed and appreciated.\u00a0Try to cut a little slack and then be pleased with progress!<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Discuss the change in routine and roles\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">The parents are home and this is unsettling to the children as well as to the Au Pair.\u00a0Some different work<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">expectations may be needed since the kids may prefer to hover around the parents.\u00a0This can make an Au Pair<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">feel unwanted and unsure of what is expected of her.\u00a0If she is thrown off balance she may not see other things<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">she can do instead of the usual.\u00a0The high emotions and energy of the kids at this time of year seem like<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">craziness to her.\u00a0Assure her that things are temporary and will be back to normal soon!\u00a0Suggest things she can<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">do to help and encourage her to roll with the punches and just enjoy the general fuss.\u00a0And host parents need to<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">\u00a0remember that no matter how stressful those long holiday days are, the rules of how many hours an Au pair<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">\u00a0can work are mandated by the State department. No Au pair is allowed to work more than 10 hours each day<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">or left in sole charge of the children for more than 10 hours.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Only in America!<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">The quantity of gifts given to the children and the excesses we enjoy of gifts, food and decorations are<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">overwhelming to most Au Pairs.\u00a0This often causes them to withdraw as they attempt to catch their breath and<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">to evaluate the differences.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>New Year&#8217;s Eve in the USA<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">Socially you should remember the holidays are a time when Au Pairs want, and need, to be with their<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">friends.\u00a0This helps their survival mechanism when they are missing old friends back home.\u00a0New Year\u2019s<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">Eve, especially in America, is a special occasion to an Au Pair so open communication is very important as you<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_aolmail_aolmail_MsoBodyText\">decide on New Year\u2019s Eve plans.
