In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades<\/strong><strong>, family gatherings and barbecues.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/07\/peachtree-race.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-215\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/07\/peachtree-race.jpg\" alt=\"peachtree race\" width=\"264\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This weekend you can count on enjoying traditional favorites such as hamburgers and hot dogs, chicken, ribs, potato salad, chips and watermelon. <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/07\/eating-watermelon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-209\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/atr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2013\/07\/eating-watermelon.jpg\" alt=\"eating watermelon\" width=\"256\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No other holiday can provide such a uniquely American experience. Being in the USA on Fourth of July can be wonderful and exciting anywhere. Here in the south, be sure to experience The Fourth in our tradition! A couple of things you will want to accomplish to be sure!<\/p>\n<p>Watch the Peachtree Road Race!<\/p>\n<p>Eat Watermelon<\/p>\n<p>See fireworks<\/p>\n<p>Hold a sparkler<\/p>\n<p>Have a picnic with fried chicken<\/p>\n<p>Sit on a porch decorated with red, white and blue bunting<\/p>\n<p>Run in a potato sack race with your host children<\/p>\n<p>Ask what the fourth of July means to Americans you have met in your Au pair year.<\/p>\n<p>On this night with fireworks soaring and families gathered together, you will see in their eyes a sense of pride and respect. Pride in a country where being free is everything\u2026\u2026 and respect for all those who give of themselves to protect that freedom.<\/p>\n<p>A few facts about this Holiday!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/fourth-of-july\/\">Fourth of July<\/a> is the federal holiday marking the Colonies&#8217; adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776,<\/li>\n<li>The Fourth of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.<\/li>\n<li>The oldest, continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States is the 4th of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island; it began in 1785.<\/li>\n<li>The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence.<\/li>\n<li>Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird but was overruled by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who wanted the bald eagle.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cStar Spangled Banner\u201d was written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 and not decreed the official national anthem of the United States until 1931.<\/li>\n<li>In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living in the new nation. (Today there are over 311 million.)<\/li>\n<li>There are more than 30 towns nationwide that have the word &#8220;Liberty&#8221; in their names.<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 150 million hot dogs are consumed on this day.
