American Studies Online
\nAmerican Studies Online is a 19-week online course offered by
\nUCLA Extension that is part self-paced, part instructor-led. The
\ncourse is offered through a customized, media-rich computerbased
\nclassroom that participants will access to read lessons,
\nwrite, share resources, network with one another and collaborate
\non special projects- all designed to further their understanding of
\nU.S. culture. Topics include U.S. history, arts in the U.S., U.S. literature,
\ncareer counseling, and optional English language exercises.
\nParticipants who successfully complete the program receive 6
\nacademic units and earn a certificate of completion from UCLA
\nExtension. Participants also will have access to a UCLA Extension
\ntranscript if they would like to apply their coursework to a degree
\nprogram at another college or university.
\nCommunity Involvement
\nThe community involvement component of APIA Advantage is
\ncomprised of Global Awareness, volunteering, and cultural and
\nhistorical activities. Au pairs will relate these experiences to their
\nacademic coursework in American Studies Online. The community
\ninvolvement requirements must be complete by the end of the 19-
\nweek online course.
\nGlobal Awareness
\nGlobal Awareness is a program designed to bring multi-cultural
\nunderstanding and appreciation to pre-school, elementary and
\nmiddle school children. Global Awareness enables au pairs to
\nvisit children in different settings in their community to share
\ntheir culture, customs and language. As part of APIA Advantage,
\na minimum of one Global
\nAwareness presentation is
\nrequired.
\nVolunteering
\nVolunteering is a great way for au pairs to connect with Americans
\nin the communities where they live and gain valuable experience
\nfor the future. When choosing volunteer opportunities,
\nau pairs should take into consideration what will fit with their
\nschedule. Some may choose to participate in one long-term volunteer
\nopportunity while others might choose various short-term
\nopportunities.
\nAu pairs can volunteer at any location that is of interest to them.
\nSome possibilities are soup kitchens, libraries, nursing homes,
\nfood banks, religious organizations, hospitals, fairs, recreation
\ncenters and museums.
\nHistorical and Cultural Activities
\nAn essential part of gaining knowledge and appreciation for
\nAmerica is learning about its history and culture, making it an
\nimportant component of APIA Advantage. Au pairs can visit historical
\nsites in their local area or while traveling in the U.S. These
\nmight be museums, monuments, battlefields, national parks, etc.
\nAdditionally, au pairs must take part in activities related to American
\nculture. There are many great cultural activities for au pairs to
\nexperience either on their own, with friends or their host families.
\nExamples include attending a baseball game, trying traditional
\nAmerican foods, learning an American style of dance and taking
\npart in holiday traditions.
