What is this new Coronavirus?<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The CDC and WHO are actively monitoring the outbreak of a new coronavirus strain called the \u201c2019 novel coronavirus\u201d or \u201c2019-nCoV\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Although the new coronavirus is being compared to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV), the symptoms of this new virus appear to be milder.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Human coronaviruses may cause mild to moderate illness in people. Some human coronaviruses have been known to cause more severe illness. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.<\/div>\n

Human coronaviruses are usually spread from an infected person to others through the air by coughing and sneezing; close personal contact (such as shaking hands), and touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands.<\/div>\n

How to protect yourself and others<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Although there are currently no vaccines available to protect against human coronavirus infection, you may be able to reduce your risk of infection by washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands; and avoiding close contact with people who are sick.<\/div>\n

If you suspect that a loved one or you have contracted the coronavirus<\/span><\/div>\n

Most people with common human coronavirus illness will recover on their own. Although there are no specific treatments for illnesses caused by human coronaviruses, consult your CVS minute clinic for care.<\/div>\n
