<\/em><\/strong>1.\u00a0 Burns: <\/em>If you are cooking with older kids and also have an infant in your care, the only <\/em>safe place for him\/her while you are cooking is in the play pen, high chair or crib.<\/p>\n 2. If a child does get burned, <\/em>put cold water on the burned area immediately.\u00a0 Then cover the burn loosely with a bandage or clean cloth.\u00a0 Call the doctor for all burns.<\/p>\n BE PREPARED –<\/strong> know where the First Aid Kit<\/em> is in your house<\/p>\n Cooking With Kids<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n Cooking with children has many benefits.\u00a0 It is a wonderful way for adults and children to have fun together while the children learn important skills.\u00a0 Cooking activities can: help to develop hand-eye coordination, help to improve small motor skills, encourage the ability to do things in a logical order, and build reading and math skills.\u00a0 Through cooperation it can give the children an important sense of accomplishment.\u00a0 There is no other way <\/em>we can see, smell, taste <\/em>and share <\/em>the results of our efforts.<\/p>\n Children as young as a year can begin to help in the kitchen doing very simple tasks such as putting ingredients into a bowl.\u00a0 By the time children are 3 or 4 they can start to use a knife, but it must always <\/em>be with adult supervision.\u00a0 Cooking on the stove <\/em>should be limited to older children.\u00a0 Use the back burner <\/em>whenever you can, and make sure pot handles don’t stick out <\/em>where little hands can reach them, or where they can accidentally be knocked off the stove.\u00a0 Make sure that children wash their hands <\/em>before cooking, and if theyr are handling meat <\/em>or eggs<\/em> they should always wash afterwards <\/em>as well.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember to teach children that clean-up <\/em>is part of cooking.\u00a0 Here are some recipes to get you started:<\/p>\n Soft Pretzels<\/strong><\/p>\n 1 package yeast<\/p>\n 1 tsp. salt<\/p>\n 4 cups flour<\/p>\n 1 1\/2 cups warm water<\/p>\n 1 Tbs. sugar<\/p>\n 1 egg, beaten<\/p>\n Stir yeast into water.\u00a0 Add the sugar and salt.\u00a0 Blend in flour.\u00a0 Knead until smooth.\u00a0 Cut into pieces and roll long and skinny.\u00a0 Let the children make balls, worms, letters, etc.\u00a0 Put on foil lined greased cookie sheet.\u00a0 Brush with egg.\u00a0 Bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes.<\/p>\n Fruit Smoothie<\/strong><\/p>\n 1 cup orange juice<\/p>\n 1\/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt<\/p>\n 1\/2 tsp. vanilla extract<\/p>\n 1 banana and\/or pieces of most any other fruit – melon, berries, peach, etc.<\/p>\n 2 tsp honey<\/p>\n dried mint or a sprinkle of cinnamon if you wish.<\/p>\n Put all ingredients in the jar of a blender – don’t fill it to the top, as it needs space to blend.\u00a0 Blend until smooth.\u00a0 You can also blend in some ice for a frosty treat<\/p>\n Muddy Hand Cookies<\/strong><\/p>\n 2\/3 cup butter<\/p>\n 1 cup sugar<\/p>\n 2 tsp. vanilla<\/p>\n 2 eggs<\/p>\n 2 1\/2 cups flour<\/p>\n 1\/2 cup unsweetened cocoa mix<\/p>\n 1\/2 tsp baking soda<\/p>\n 1\/4 tsp. salt<\/p>\n Cream butter, sugar and vanilla together.\u00a0 Add eggs and mix well.\u00a0 Add dry ingredients, blending thoroughly.\u00a0 Chill dough until firm.\u00a0 Roll dough out to 1\/4 inch thick.\u00a0 Lay you hand on the dough and cut around it to make your hand print.\u00a0 Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 6-8 minutes<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
