This is Fire Safety Week.\u00a0 Right on cue, my pre-school aged daughter came home talking about the fire drill at school.\u00a0 She is not a fan of loud noises so became teary eyed as the story progressed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To ease her fears we talked\u00a0 about what to do in case of an emergency, practiced slithering along the floor and touching the doorknobs to see if they were hot.\u00a0 It brought me back to when my\u00a0family did this when we were younger.\u00a0 I especially remember\u00a0the year my\u00a0brother, no stranger to the ER at age five, was in kindergarten.\u00a0 After we talked about how we’d go out the back door he wandered off, his attention diverted by who knows what.\u00a0\u00a0 Well, he actually went out his escape route—right out his second floor bedroom window<\/em>!\u00a0 He was unharmed, which he credited with the pillow he threw out first–to break his fall.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When\u00a0I spoke to him today and reminded him about it,\u00a0almost thirty years later, he\u00a0still maintains\u00a0he planned it that way-the pillow was perfectly placed so he wouldn’t get hurt.\u00a0\u00a0 A little planning is a good thing it seems…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
