Host families and au pairs may agree to higher amounts, but no au pair should be paid below the minimum for their program. The minimum weekly stipend is calculated by the U.S. Department of State after accounting for costs associated with weekly room and board. Host families and au pairs are free to agree to compensation higher than the legally applicable minimum.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008080\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333\">A<\/span> Standard Au Pair<\/span> receives a weekly stipend of no less than US $195.75.<\/li>\n<li>An <span style=\"color: #008080\">Au Pair Extraordinaire<\/span> receives a weekly stipend of no less than US $300.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">When is the first stipend paid?<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 Day one of an au pair\u2019s first pay week is the day they arrive to orientation (typically a Monday).\u00a0The first payday should occur within the first seven days of an au pair\u2019s arrival to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Au pairs are to be paid their full stipend beginning with week one. Pay day may be any day of the week as long as it remains consistent. For example, if a host family chooses Friday as their pay day, they are paying for the week in progress (Mon-Sun).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">How you will get paid until you have a bank account<\/span> \u2013\u00a0You may receive your stipend (weekly pay) in cash until you open a bank account. Or your host family may take you to the bank with your first stipend so you may use that to open the account.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"color: #008080\">Opening a US Bank Account<\/span><\/h1>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">How you will get paid until you have a bank account<\/span> \u2013\u00a0You may receive your stipend (weekly pay) in cash until you open a bank account. Or your host family may take you to the bank with your first stipend so you may use that to open the account.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">When to open your bank account \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is possible to open a bank account before you get your Social Security Number. If the bank employee you are dealing with is unfamiliar with the process, you may need speak with a manager.<\/li>\n<li>Some au pairs choose to wait until after they have their Social Security Number, to open a bank account. Process to get your Social Security Card can be found<span style=\"color: #008080\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #008080\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/dcc\/resources\/applying-for-your-social-security-card\/\">here.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">Banks that are good for au pairs<\/span> \u2013\u00a0Almost all banks have some type of free or low cost checking account. As a J-1 au pair visa is very similar to an F-1 student visa, you may ask to open a student bank account.\u00a0 Below are some bank recommendations because the accounts have specific names you can ask for when you go. Consider which banks are closest to your home and\/or have convenient ATM locations.<\/p>\n<p>We are not recommending any one bank over another. We are just providing this for your information. This information is subject to change without notice, so check the websites before going to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>If you find a free or low cost account at a bank we don\u2019t have listed here, please let your Community Counselor know.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008080\">Credit Unions<\/span>\u00a0are a type of not for profit bank. If your host parents are members of a credit union, you may be able to apply since you are living at their address.
