\"JWI_HalloweenOwl\"Halloween (or Hallow e\u2019en) is a celebration\u00a0observed in a number of countries<\/span>\u00a0including the United States on October 31st.\u00a0 Halloween has a special significance for children, who dress in funny or ghostly costumes and knock on neighborhood doors shouting \u201cTrick or Treat!\u201d Pirates and princesses, ghosts and witches all hold bags open to catch the candy or other goodies that the neighbors drop in.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the 800\u2019s, November 1st is a religious holiday known as All Saints\u2019 Day. The Mass that was said on this day was called Allhallowmas. The evening before became known as All Hallow e\u2019en, or Halloween. Like some other American celebrations, its origins lie in both pre-Christian and Christian customs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most popular Halloween activities include\u00a0trick-or-treating<\/span><\/a>\u00a0attending\u00a0Halloween costume<\/span>\u00a0parties,\u00a0decorating<\/span>, carving\u00a0pumpkins<\/span><\/a>\u00a0into\u00a0jack-o\u2019-lanterns<\/span>, lighting\u00a0bonfires<\/span>,\u00a0apple bobbing<\/span>, playing\u00a0pranks<\/span>, visiting\u00a0haunted attractions<\/span>, telling scary stories, and watching\u00a0horror films<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Halloween can be a lot of fun but it is also a time when safety should come first. Here are some tips for Monday:<\/span><\/p>\n

Adult supervision is essential.<\/b>\u00a0Always accompany the children if they are going door to door to trick or treat<\/span><\/p>\n

Try tick-or-treat-friendly homes.<\/b>\u00a0Ensure the children only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay outside.<\/b>\u00a0Make sure the children don\u2019t go inside someone\u2019s house. They can trick or treat on the porch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remain visible.<\/b>\u00a0Dress the children in bright costumes or have them wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quality-check treats.<\/b>\u00a0Check the candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Say \u201cno\u201d to strangers.<\/b>\u00a0Remind the children to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
