{"id":20,"date":"2024-11-04T17:31:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T17:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/hwn\/?page_id=20"},"modified":"2024-11-04T17:36:11","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T17:36:11","slug":"applying-for-your-social-security-card","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/hwn\/resources\/applying-for-your-social-security-card\/","title":{"rendered":"Applying for Your Social Security Card"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Au pairs should wait until they have been in the U.S. for at least 4 days before completing the online application for a social security number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1 \u2013 Gather your documents.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Print your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/I94\/#\/home\">I-94 Card<\/a>\u00a0(Click on \u201cGet Most Recent I-94\u201d at the top of the page)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Print your Participation Letter (on your au pair portal)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>passport\/visa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DS-2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>country driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>international driver\u2019s permit or certified translation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2 \u2013 Complete the online Social Security number application.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/ossnap\/public\/landingOSsnap\">Online Social Security Application<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be sure to fill out the application listing your name EXACTLY as it is shown on your visa.If you have more than one first or last name, it could be listed differently than how you would think.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If asked for citizenship information, select \u201cLegal Alien Allowed To Work\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3 \u2013 Make an appointment to go in person to a Social Security office (within 45 days of your online application).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsecurity.gov\/locator\/\">Social Security Office Locator<\/a>\u00a0to find an office near you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the phone number of your local office during their business hours listed or call 1-800-772-1213 (Mon-Fri, 8 am-7 pm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4 \u2013 Go in person to your social security appointment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring all of the documents listed in step one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5 \u2013 Receive the card in the mail (usually within 2 weeks).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>When your card comes in the mail, save the envelope and everything inside.\u00a0<\/strong>(Very important for getting your MD driver\u2019s license.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you have your social security card, protect this important private information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your card at home unless you are going somewhere that you know you will need it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not share this number with anyone unless it\u2019s for an official purpose or service that you have contacted (such as with your host family, the bank, DMV or tax preparer).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beware of anyone who calls you on the phone asking for this number.
