Effective communication with your Host Family is the key to a successful year:<\/em><\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0If you don\u2019t understand something your host family has said, tell them. They will be happy to help you. Nodding and saying yes if you don\u2019t understand will only result in a problem later on.<\/li>\n
  2. Sit down with your host family and review your responsibilities, schedule and house rules as soon as possible.\u00a0 Make sure you understand them.<\/li>\n
  3. \u00a0Sit down with your host family at the end of every week to review how the week went. This is the perfect time to evaluate how things are going and to decide if changes are necessary.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  4. Speak up! If there is a problem, a concern, something you don\u2019t understand, tell your host family about it immediately.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  5. Talk to your community counselor.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s helpful to have a neutral person to \u201cbounce an idea off of.\u201d\u00a0 The counselor is here to help you as well as the host family. Everyone wants this to be a successful match.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  6. Try to resolve conflicts as they arise.\u00a0 TALK, TALK, TALK! No one will know you are upset if you don\u2019t say something.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  7. It is important to try to see the other person\u2019s point of view. You may not agree with it, but it\u2019s helpful to understand how the other person views the situation.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  8. Don\u2019t expect your HF to read your mind!\u00a0 Speak up! \u00a0Don\u2019t say, \u201cThe Host Family should know how I feel!\u201d No one can know unless you SPEAK UP!\u00a0<\/li>\n
  9. Do not keep your negative feelings to yourself.\u00a0 No one will know what\u2019s troubling you unless you SPEAK UP!!\u00a0<\/li>\n
