Or your host family may take you to the bank with your first stipend so you may use that to open the account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When to open your bank account \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is possible to open a bank account before you get your Social Security Number. If the bank employee you are dealing with is unfamiliar with the process,\u00a0you may need speak with a manager.<\/li>\n<li>Some au pairs choose to wait until after they have their Social Security Number, to open a bank account. Process to get your Social Security Card can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/mdf\/resources\/social-security-card-application-process\/\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Banks that are good for au pairs \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Almost all banks have some type of free or low cost checking account. Below are some bank recommendations because the accounts have specific names you can ask for when you go. Consider what banks are closest to your home and\/or have convenient ATM locations.<\/p>\n<p>We are not recommending any one bank over another. We are just providing this for your information. This information is subject to change without notice, so check the websites before going to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>If you find a free or low cost account at a bank we don\u2019t have listed here, please let your community counselor know, so it may be added.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Credit Unions<\/strong> are a type of not for profit bank. If your host parents are members of a credit union, you may be able to apply since you are living at their address. Your host parents will need to go with you to do this.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>PNC Bank<\/strong><\/em> has the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnc.com\/en\/personal-banking\/virtual-wallet-overview.html\"><strong>Virtual Wallet Account<\/strong><\/a><\/em> that is free once you have $500 in the bank and they give you<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Truist Bank<\/strong><\/em> has the <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truist.com\/checking\/truist-one-banking?cid=PS-GOOG-120722085&amp;CampIDMaj=AAAKU&amp;CampIDMin=AAA&amp;cid=PS-GOOG-071223098&amp;CampIDMaj=AAAUB&amp;CampIDMin=AIW&amp;gad=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwoeemBhCfARIsADR2QCsenRgP4u42X3u90BWwuGSDDSe7FJXuDvgHw1u__3jkjGZw4FJJn_saAslYEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">Truist One Checking Account<\/a><\/strong><\/em> with low monthly fees and the fees can be waived once you have $500 balance in your account.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Wells Fargo Bank<\/strong><\/em> has two low cost accounts if you are age 24 and under.
