{"id":556,"date":"2013-01-22T22:41:31","date_gmt":"2013-01-23T04:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/nol\/?p=556"},"modified":"2013-01-22T22:41:31","modified_gmt":"2013-01-23T04:41:31","slug":"puppets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/nol\/2013\/01\/22\/puppets\/","title":{"rendered":"Puppets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>PUPPETS<\/strong><\/span> are a wonderful way to enjoy art and drama and to develop language skills.<br \/>\nThey can be used with all ages of children.\u00a0 The youngest children can watch you perform and talk to the puppet.\u00a0 Starting at about age 3 the children can help make the puppets and put on simple \u2018shows.\u2019\u00a0 You can make a puppet from almost anything.\u00a0 Here are some ideas to get you started.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>Finger puppets: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n\u2666 Draw a face on your fingertip.<br \/>\n\u2666 Draw on strips of paper and tape them around your fingers to make different characters.<br \/>\n\u2666 Decorate the fingertips of an old glove with felt, yarn for hair and beads or buttons for eyes;<br \/>\nmake a whole family on one hand.<br \/>\n\u2666 Cut out simple animal or people outlines on cardboard.\u00a0 Do not include legs or feet but leave a wide bottom edge.\u00a0 Cut out two holes near the bottom \u2013 large enough to put a finger through each hole.\u00a0 Your fingers can make this kind of puppet dance or walk.<br \/>\n\u2666 Almost anything slipped over your fingertip can make a puppet \u2013 try making faces on a paper cup, or a ball.\u00a0 Put a cloth napkin over your hand first to give the puppet some clothes.<br \/>\n\u2666 A toilet paper tube can be used vertically for a soldier or other figure, or horizontally for a dragon or other long animals.\u00a0 Just put the tube over your finger to make it move.<br \/>\nStick puppets:<br \/>\n\u2666 Make a drawing of an animal or person and glue it to the end of a Popsicle stick.\u00a0 You can drawhair or make the hair more interesting using curled paper.<br \/>\n\u2666 Cut out photographs of members of the family or friends and glue them to sticks.\u00a0 You can act out real family events.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>Sock Puppets: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n\u2666 A simple puppet can be made from an old sock by adding hair and eyes.\u00a0 Put your thumb in the heel and your fingers in the toe of the sock to make the mouth.<br \/>\n\u2666 For a fancier version cut a plastic lid in half and then tape it together to make a hinge.\u00a0 Glue this mouth in place at the toe end of a sock.\u00a0 This makes a great dragon.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>Paper Bag Puppe<span style=\"color: #008000\">ts<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000\">:<\/span><br \/>\n\u2666 Take a lunch size paper bag and draw a face on the flap at the bottom of the bag.\u00a0 Glue on hair, ears or other features.\u00a0 Put your hand inside the bag.\u00a0 Move the flap up and down to make the puppet talk.<br \/>\n\u2666 To make an owl glue or draw eyes under the flap.\u00a0 Draw eyelids and eyelashes on the flap.\u00a0 Add wings, ears and feet.\u00a0 When you move the flap up and down the owl will blink.<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">Making a Stage for the Puppets<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n\u2666 Hide behind the back of a couch.<br \/>\n\u2666 Use the edge of a table covered with a tablecloth or turn a table on its side on the floor.<br \/>\n\u2666 Balance a mop handle or broom stick between two chairs and hang a large towel or blanket over the stick to make a stage.<br \/>\n\u2666 Make a puppet theatre out of a large cardboard box (appliance size).\u00a0 Cut a window for the<br \/>\npuppets.\u00a0 Operate the puppets from inside.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>Enjoy the show!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PUPPETS are a wonderful way to enjoy art and drama and to develop language skills.
