{"id":174,"date":"2012-10-29T16:10:42","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T20:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/phd\/?page_id=28"},"modified":"2012-10-29T16:10:42","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T20:10:42","slug":"au-pair-info","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/phd\/au-pair-info\/","title":{"rendered":"Au Pair Info"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Thanksgiving \u2013 an American Holiday<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-right: 8px;padding-top: 8px;padding-bottom: 8px\" src=\"http:\/\/amreese.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/blog.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"350\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>Thanksgiving, a uniquely American holiday, dates back to the first European settlers in North America.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>After much hardship, illness and hard work, the Pilgrims were finally able to celebrate a successful harvest which they shared with their Native American friends who had helped them through their difficult beginning in America.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>Today this day is set aside to feast and to give thanks-something we can all share, as we too celebrate our cross-cultural friendships.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Some activities to share with the children<\/strong> :<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\"><strong><em>Maple-Nut-Berry Popcorn Balls<\/em><\/strong> <\/span>(   for children ages 3 and older): Add some chopped walnuts and\u00a0   raspberries, blueberries or blackberries. Add enough melted butter to   lightly coat popcorn. Stir. Pour maple syrup over the warm popcorn and   stir until all the corn, nuts and berries are covered. Shape the sticky   corn into balls and place on a plate to refrigerate until the syrup   hardens.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080\"><em>Thanksgiving cards and place cards<\/em><\/span><\/strong>:   Fold a piece of paper in half, place a leaf on the inside and close  the  card. Use a crayon to rub lightly across the front of the card in  the  area where the leaf is. The shape of the leaf will appear on the   outside. Remove the leaf. Write a name on the front for a place card, or   a message inside for a Thanksgiving card. Older children might want to   make more sophisticated designs using more than one leaf.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\"><strong><em>Make a chain of paper doll <\/em><\/strong><\/span>(adults   should do the cutting): Fold a piece of paper back and forth over and   over again with a width between folds of 2-3 inches. With the paper   folded cut out a shape of a person, make sure that the hands and feet   touch the fold, but don\u2019t cut through the fold. When you unfold the   paper there will be a line of people holding hands. Children ages 3-10   can color the figures to look like Pilgrims(men wore big white collars,   belts with buckles, and buckles on their shoes, pants to their knees;   women wore white hats and aprons over solid color dresses) or Native   Americans (draw feather headdresses\u00a0 and brightly colored geometric   patterns on their clothes).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\"><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080\"><strong>Tree of Thanks<\/strong><\/span>:<\/em> This Thanksgiving tree is bound to become a new holiday tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Trace leaves onto autumn colored craft\u2019s paper and cut out. Punch a   hole into the stem of each paper leaf. Measure and cut a 2\u201d length of   wire or twine for each leaf. Thread it through the hole and bend the   ends to make a hook for hanging. Place the tree branches in a pot or   vase. Let the children or\/and guests choose a leaf or two and ask them   to jot down things that they are thankful for.<\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"Permanent Link to Holiday Reminders for Au Pairs and Host Families\" rel=\"bookmark\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/phm\/2012\/11\/19\/holiday-reminders-for-au-pairs-and-host-families\/\">Holiday Reminders for Au Pairs and Host Families<\/a><\/h3>\n<div>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\">With   the holiday season just around the corner, it is important to review   this little reminder about program rules for holidays and vacations.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;padding: 5px;border: initial none initial\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.aupairinamerica.com\/mdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/06\/luggage-malias-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"luggage malias\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><strong>Holidays<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-top: 5px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 5px;padding-left: 0px;margin: 0px\">\n<li>Host families are NOT REQUIRED to give au pairs any specific holidays.<\/li>\n<li>Each host family will make different arrangements on holidays, some au pairs will be off and others will be required to work.<\/li>\n<li>Au pairs should NOT make plans for holidays without checking with your host family\u00a0FIRST.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><strong>Vacation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-top: 5px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 5px;padding-left: 0px;margin: 0px\">\n<li>Au pair earns 2 weeks of paid vacation during the course of her year.<\/li>\n<li>The host family can pick a week and the au pair can pick a week, if an agreement is not reached.<\/li>\n<li>All vacation should be preplanned (at least 4 weeks in advance.)<\/li>\n<li>All au pair\u2019s friends and\/or family visits\/vacations should be pre-approved prior to purchasing a ticket.<\/li>\n<li>If an au pair travels with their host family, it should be discussed   UP FRONT whether this is the au pair\u2019s vacation or if she is working.<\/li>\n<li>If an au pair travels with the host family to work, the host family   is required to pay for her transportation, lodging and meals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep these things in mind as you plan your travel and we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 8px 0px 8px 30px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Important:   An au pair MUST have her DS2019 signed PRIOR to her departure from the   US. One helpful approach is  to engage them in car games in the   safety of their car seat or seat  belt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>I Spy<\/strong>:\u00a0 Very young  children can play\u201d\u201d I Spy with my   little eye\u201d\u201d and they say the color  of the thing they are looking at   and everyone else in the car needs to  guess what it is.\u00a0 For example,   \u201c\u201dI spy my with my little eye  something red\u201d\u201d and people guess that the   child is looking at a red  car or red mailbox.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong> Alphabet Game- ages 3 and up<\/strong> \u2013 Children who can identify letters <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span> can easily see out the window of the car can play this game. One child    starts with A and has to find a word on a sign visible from the car   with  the letter A. You should not be giving  out information like your telephone number and address to people you  don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>Once you post something on the internet (even if you later delete  it), it can show up elsewhere.\u00a0 Unless you have specific permission from  the host family, you should not post pictures of them, their children  or their home on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a blog or website where you post in your native language,  remember there is translation software.\u00a0 So, even if you say it in your  native language, be sure it is not something you will regret.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333399\">HOW FAMILIES AND AU PAIRS HANDLE MISCELLANEOUS EXPENSES<\/span><\/h4>\n<div>\n<div style=\"padding: 0px;margin: 0px\">\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><strong>Miscellaneous Expenses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;padding-left: 0px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\">There  are different ways to handle the little expenses that may come up.\u00a0  Things like when an au pair takes the kids out for ice cream or picks up  a gallon of milk.\u00a0 Some families keep a cookie jar fund, a little cash  that they set aside weekly or monthly for this kind of expenses.\u00a0 Here  are some suggestions for avoiding problems with that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 8px 0px 8px 30px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>Au Pairs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 60px\">\n<li>Only spend the money on approved expenses.<\/li>\n<li>If it is something you are not sure about, ask first.<\/li>\n<li>Put your receipts in the cookie jar in place of the money to avoid any confusion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding: 8px 0px 8px 30px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Host Families<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 60px\">\n<li>It\u2019s important to be clear about how long this money should last and what types of expenses are approved.<\/li>\n<li>Let the au pair know whether or not you expect receipts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><strong>Gas and Fare Cards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 8px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 8px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\"><span style=\"color: #800000\">Host families are responsible for the au pair\u2019s transportation costs<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 60px\">\n<li>to and from classes and cluster meetings<\/li>\n<li>driving the kids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding: 8px 0px 8px 60px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\">It  is a good idea to figure out how much gas an au pair will use for these  trips and either put gas in the car or give a gas allowance. \u00a0 If your  au pair is riding to classes or cluster meetings with another au pair,  you should offer to share the cost of gas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 8px 0px 8px 60px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 0px\">Au  pairs are responsible for their own transportation at all other times.\u00a0  You should replace the amount of gas used for personal use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanksgiving \u2013 an American Holiday Thanksgiving, a uniquely American holiday, dates back to the first European settlers in North America.
