November Cluster Meeting – Thanksgiving Dinner

Rhode Island au pairs had the opportunity to celebrate the American Thanksgiving holiday at their November cluster meeting as they shared a Thanksgiving dinner with International students from Brown University and friends of the International House of Rhode Island. Thanksgiving Dinner (which was the first for most au pairs and international students!) was a traditional meal of roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, apple pie, and hot mulled apple cider. The food was delicious, and it was a fun and festive evening for all! For au pairs, this dinner was a preview of coming attractions — a prelude to Thanksgiving Dinner which most will be sharing with host families and friends on Thanksgiving Day — Thursday, November 28.

August Meeting at Lincoln Woods State Park

picnic groupOur Picnic and Kayaking Event at Lincoln Woods State Park was a lot of fun! It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and a good time was had by all — even our “Mascot” Au Pair Bear. Since he accompanies us to many of our meetings and events, we’ve decided that it would be appropriate to give him a name, and have initiated a contest to name the bear. The name and the contest winner will be announced at our September cluster meeting in Smithfield. At that meeting we plan to have our annual birthday party/gift exchange and do some apple picking. Autumn will be in the air by then, the leaves will have begun to show their Fall colors. It is sure to be a memorable and fun day!

Au Pairs Celebrate Spring

2013 5-19 Au Pair Picinic
Spring is definitely in the air…and Rhode Island au pairs welcomed the nice weather by organizing a picnic at India Point Park in Providence on a recent Sunday afternoon. Everyone brought food to share, and the mood was upbeat and enthusiastic. It’s been a long, cold winter for all of us, and especially those au pairs who have come to us from warmer climates. The arrival of warmer weather and longer days brings us all a sense of rejuvenation. Rhode Island au pairs are planning another picnic which will be scheduled on a week-day when they can bring along their children for a play date. With summer just around the corner, there are a lot of plans in the works for au pairs who want to make the most of their time here in the beautiful “Ocean State”!

Earth Day 2013

Earth Day is observed on April 22 and was started in the United States in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson to create awareness for the Earth’s environment and to encourage conservation efforts. In 1990, Earth Day was taken international, and today, more than 500 million people in 175 countries observe Earth Day.

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, it has been an annual event for people around the world to celebrate the earth and renew their commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner world for all of us. This year, au pairs in Rhode Island will have the opportunity to volunteer as a group to do something nice for the earth, have fun, meet new people, and make a difference! Details of Au Pair in America’s Earth Day activities will follow.

Halloween Activities for Au Pairs and Children in Rhode Island

2011 HalloweenHalloween is celebrated on October 31st in the United States. It is a favorite family celebration – a time for traditions such as dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, and carving pumpkins. American children dress up in funny or scary costumes and go “trick or treating”. The neighbors are expected to respond by giving them small treats. Adults may also dress in costume for Halloween parties. The name “Halloween” comes from the Christian tradition. It is derived from “All Hallow’s Eve.” October 31st is the eve of All Hallows day, better known as All Saints Day. This is a day when the church celebrates and remembers the lives of the saints.

Au Pairs Enjoy Newport's Cliff Walk

IMG_0738After a rainy week in Rhode Island, the sun came on brightly for our May 21 hike along Newport’s Cliff Walk.  Cliff Walk isIMG_0736IMG_0739  a 3.5 mile long path along cliffs – the Atlantic Ocean is on the left, and Newport’s most famous mansions are on the right. The view is absolutely gorgeous!  After our walk, many au pairs spent the rest of their day exploring Newport, our beautiful “city by the sea”.

Baby, It's Cold Outside!

Slide1On Sunday evening, January 23, our cluster meeting was scheduled at the Bank of Ameirca Skating Center at Kennedy Plaza.  Frigid, below-zero temperatures drew most of us across the street, though, where there is a warm, toasty Starbucks at the Biltmore hotel, just steps away from the skating rink.  It was a very comfortable place to be on a cold, winter, night.  There were a few who immersed themselves into winter sports, though, despite the cold weather.  Three au pairs (all from Thailand) not only enjoyed skating on Sunday, but also spent sometime snow-tubing earlier in the day!  They really enjoyed immersing themselves in our cold, winter weather.  We said “Farewell”  to Jade, from South Africa, who has successfully completed two years with Au Pair in America and is now moving on to her next exciting adventure!  Our next meeting is scheduled indoors, and it won’t matter how cold it is outside.  We’ll be enjoying a Zumba class….and the heat will be on!!!
