Helping Young Children Learn Language

Being an au pair is an important role in a child’s life. When you are caring for a young child up to 45 hours per week, there are lots of opportunities to help them learn language. Many host parents are eager for their children to be exposed to foreign language. If this is true of your host parents, you can try the suggestions below, in both English and your native language.

Below are a few tips to start with, for more ideas, check out Ready at Five.

  • Read – Read to them daily, point out pictures and ask questions. Even if they can’t answer the questions, this is still modeling conversation.
  • Talk – Point out objects around them, names of their body parts, explain what you are doing and places you are going. Long before babies can speak, they benefit greatly from being spoken to.
  • Sing – You can sing childhood classics or make up your own silly songs. If you are looking for song ideas, HERE is a great website with lists of songs, lyrics and links to YouTube videos* of the songs.  Children’s music is also available at the public library and even on iTunes.
  • Words – As children move from toddlers to preschoolers begin to point out written language.
  • Writing – Toddlers and preschoolers can begin to learn pre-writing skills by drawing with crayons or doing finger paints.

*The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for babies under 18 months of age. For children 18 months to 5 years they recommend no more than 1 hour of high quality content. You can play the songs on youtube for the audio and not necessarily show the screen to the child.

Host Family Pumpkin Patch – Oct 2015

We were blessed with a beautiful fall evening at the pumpkin patch and plenty of activities from hay rides to hay bale mazes. I have to say there’s nothing cuter than our little ones picking out pumpkins that are twice their size! Thanks to everyone that came out and shared in the fun!Oct HF 2Oct HF 3Oct HF 4OCt HF 5Oct HF 1OCt HF 6

Film Night in Dolores Park – Sept 2015

With blankets in hand and picnic baskets full of snacks, we joined the crowd at Dolores Park. Everyone cheered along with the 1985 Back to the Future showing! It was great getting to introduce the Au Pairs to Marty and Doc Brown, and of course the DeLorean time traveling machine. Their lives are definitely more complete now that they’ve seen this American comic science fiction favorite. It was a wonderful fall evening with wonderful company! Sept Event 1 Sept Event 2

SF Scavenger Hunt – July 2015

What we did not know was that it was going to be 90 degrees outside, but that did not slow down these girls! We had a wonderful time scouting out local landmarks and San Francisco favorites as we raced against the clock to complete as many challenges as possible on our scavenger hunt. From pics of sourdough bread to hiking to the top of Buena Vista Park, there was never a dull moment. July EventJuly Pic 2July Pic 3

St. Patrick’s Day Brunch – March 2015

We enjoyed a yummy brunch on a beautiful Sunday morning at the The Vestry. It’s so nice for all of us to catch up over coffee, banana bread, and burgers!  Our talks included the history of St. Patrick’s Day and fun activities to do with the kids, as well as our childhood development topic of Children and Stress. It’s helpful to know how to identify the onset of too much stress and anxiety, how to address, and handle moving forward.

Getting Down to Business With Taxes – Feb 2015

Feb EventThis month we held the dreaded tax meeting, two nights so that all the girls could make it. They were good sports patiently listening to information about forms, numbers, and deadlines. We lightened the mood with cheese dip, valentine’s day brownies, and Jenga!
