\u00a0<\/strong>Tips on obtaining these documents in this order<\/u>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Social Security Number: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

All au pairs will need a SS# to file taxes.\u00a0 Most will also use this to open a bank account and obtain a driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n

Most families accompany their au pair to the SS office to obtain this number.\u00a0 Typically this is done the Friday after the au pair arrives during her first three days of training or shadowing.\u00a0 Follow directions on this link:<\/p>\n

* Passport (has photo)<\/p>\n

* 1-94 Number \u2013 she should go to www.cbp.gov\/I94<\/a> to print out her card information)<\/p>\n

* J-1 Visa (has photo) and is also inside her passport<\/p>\n

* DS 20-19\u00a0 (folded white paper… shows she is sponsored by APIA) very important document used to first obtain the J-1 visa.<\/p>\n

If you are having trouble obtaining this number while at the office, please ask for a supervisor.\u00a0 Let the supervisor know that au pairs do not need a letter and that this policy is stated in the POM (program operations manual) for social security and the reference to this information can be found in section RM 10211.345.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Bank Account: <\/u>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Most banks now require a Social Security card to get an account.\u00a0 Bank of America is one exception.\u00a0 Best if au pair goes in with\u00a0a host parent to help if explanation is needed, but sets up an individual account.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>Driving License<\/u><\/strong>: <\/strong><\/p>\n

All Au Pairs arrive with an international license (good for one year in CA state*).\u00a0 However, most Au Pairs will get a CA State License as the host family\u2019s insurance will determine this need and timing.\u00a0 Do not allow the au pair to drive without being insured by host family carrier.\u00a0 (depending on what the timing is or requirement of the HF car insurance provider \u2013 check with them before driving).<\/p>\n

There are long waits to get a practical driving test appointment!\u00a0 It\u2019s best to set up the written test as soon as possible if she needs to be driving quickly. (Au Pairs cannot take a practical driving test until the written test is passed).<\/p>\n
