Spreading the Word About APIA – Seminar for Au Pairs

NOLAupairs

For more than 25 years, Au Pair in America has been the leading provider for intercultural live-in child care in the U.S. Since 1986, more than 90,000 of our au pairs have provided the highest quality care to American host families.

APIA au pairs who have been in the USA for at least two months are invited to attend a seminar to learn how to spread the word about APIA and encourage American families to experience all the benefits of excellent dependable childcare with a cultural flair.

The webinars will take place this Thursday, August 7th and Friday, August 8th.

Alexiane Says Au Revoir to New Orleans

NOLAlex

Q: How would you describe your year as au pair in America?

Fantastic. I have no regrets about my decision to become an au pair. I think being in an American family is the best way to discover and understand this country, and this is what makes this experience unique. I’ve met a wonderful family, I’ve got the chance to travel and see different parts of the USA, I’ve met wonderful people and I would never forget this year.

Q: What surprised you most about the USA?

I would say the people. Americans are so friendly and you can easily talk with someone while waiting for your coffee or at the gym with people smiling at you and asking how you’re doing. Pretty much something I wasn’t used to. Also, this country is huge… Everything is bigger.

Q: What was the most memorable experience you shared with your host family?

All the special moments I had the opportunity to experience with them such as the 4th of July, Thanksgiving or Christmas… It was interesting to see how they celebrate holidays and so nice from them to include me.

Other memorable things are when I’m with the kids and we are all laughing and having fun, these simple but magic moments make all sense for an au pair.

Q: The best trip you took.

Every new trip is the best! But New York with my family coming from France was kind of special. Excited for my travel month now.

Q: What advice would you give future au pairs?

Make it the best. Don’t overthink things, sometimes you just need to be confident in what you’re doing. Do your best, parents will notice it, and enjoy every moment. Remember that you’re trying to make it easier for everyone including you. 🙂

Au Pairs Meet Local Parents at Baby and Child Expo

On Saturday, July 7, 2012 au pairs participated in Baby and Child Expo organized by La Leche League of Jefferson. Grouped around the Au Pair in America display in the center court of Lakeview Mall in Metairie, au pairs were happy to chat with visiting families. They talked about Au Pair in America program, different options of care, program rules, cost, and the wonderful experience of sharing the culture of their respective countries with host families.

Holiday Cheer

Potluck and gift exchange were on the agenda for the December cluster meeting. Just for the fun of it, au pairs unwrapped the presents while wearing oven mitts. It was a challenge, but they completed the task with great alacrity. They also had fun swapping tips on Christmas shopping and discussing holiday plans and winter break activities with their host kids.NOLxmas2011pt1NOLxmas2011pt2NOLxmasgiftsNOLxmasSuziRaelee

AAA HomeDriving in the United States

A Driver Safety Course Custom Designed

with Au Pairs In Mind

No matter how much driving experience your new au pair may have, she is now preparing to drive in a foreign country.  If you have ever driven in a foreign country or even rented a car somewhere you have never driven before, it may help you to recall what that feels like. It can be a challenge for even the most experienced of drivers.

This is why Au Pair in America has partnered with AAA, the nation’s most trusted name in driver safety and instruction, to offer a custom course specifically designed for au pairs. This course differs from those offered in your community, in that AAA has taken the best of several of their courses, adapted them to be the most accessible to the au pair population, with special focus on driver and child passenger safety. Key components of the course include:

Ø  Driver Safety

Ø  Child passenger safety (car seats, communication, expectations)

Ø  Communication and traffic devices

Ø  Vehicle Awareness (understanding what your vehicle is “telling you.”)

Ø  Reducing Risks while Driving (includes defensive driving techniques, phone/texting issues, and drinking and driving awareness)

The course includes:

– AAA course designed exclusively for Au Pair In America.  Course includes a combination of lecture, group exercises, video/other media to ensure the maximum understanding to speakers of other languages or newly arrived to the US participants.

– An extra night and meals at the Holiday Inn Select, Stamford CT.   Au Pairs will arrive at orientation a day early, and attend the AAA course before the main orientation sessions begin.  Au pairs will depart from orientation on the regularly scheduled departure day to your home.

– Certificate of completion from AAA* with supporting documents for au pair and host family resource throughout the year.

For more information about the course please contact APIA community counselor.
