Olympic Fun

APIA HF Olympics 024

APIA HF Olympics 025On Sunday, July 29th, Suffolk County Au Pair in America host families and au pairs gathered at their Community Counselor’s beach house for some Olympic fun.  The kids started by coloring some Olympic rings and creating their own flags. Games were played with host kids, au pairs and the parents.  Lots of giggles were heard as they filled up buckets of water in a relay race, dressed up in silly outfits during another race, did a ring toss and other games.   Time for a swim in the Long Island Sound, digging in the sand, walks on the beach and then a potluck dinner & BBQ.

APIA HF Olympics 027Everyone learned a little more about each other.  Experienced host parents chatted with new host parents.  New au pairs met long term au pairs.  Friendships grew between host kids.  After dessert & coffee, everyone headed home a little closer then when they arrived.

Behind the Orange Curtain (85 minutes)
This documentary explores the prescription drug overdose deaths of teenagers in record numbers in Orange County, California, one of the nation’s wealthiest suburbs – an issue not too far removed from the prescription drug epidemic on Long Island. It makes its East Coast premiere, with its director, Brent Huff, and Natalie Costa, its executive producer, in attendance at the screening. Watch the documentary’s trailer here.

9:30 p.m.

A Russian Elephant in the Room (12 minutes)
A short film from U.K. director Tanya Andrews about a lonely young boy who discovers a clown down-on-his-luck.

My First Wedding (102 minutes) – in Spanish with subtitles
Jewish-born Adrián and Catholic-born Leonora are set to be married – but the groom has misplaced the wedding rings, the priest and the rabbi have lost their chauffeur, and the families are of little help. A comedy that draws upon the politics of “The Big Day” from writer Patricio Vega and director Ariel Winograd.
