APIA Long Island Cluster Annual Canoe Trip

On a beautiful August afternoon, all 4 Long Island Au Pair in America Clusters canoed on the Nissequogue River.  The trip took about 2 hours, and we canoed in with the tide from Kings Park to the Smithtown Paul T. Givens Park.

16 canoes filled with au pairs and 4 Community Counselors paddled along the winding river.  Lots of other people were kayaking and canoeing along side us.  After the trip, au pairs relaxed waiting for their friends to all finish the route.

Fun day spent with friends!  Au Pair cluster activities provide au pairs with time with friends, opportunities to get to know each other and their counselors better.  It is an important part of the Au Pair in America experience!

Au Pair in America had a great day at Duck Pond Day in Wading River!  It was a beautiful day to spend with neighbors in this charming Suffolk County, Long Island village.  Music, food and lots of families had tons of fun.

3 Au Pairs helped out with kids coloring pictures of ducks on the pond and applying APIA tattoos.  The tattoos were a big hit with all the kids!

May Happenings for Suffolk Au Pair in America

Au Pairs from our cluster enjoying a social evening of pizza and fellowship at West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook this May.  We enjoyed a beautiful evening with a perfect sunset on the Long Island Sound.  Community Counselor Cindy Garruba brought pizza and water bottles, au pairs shared stories about who they are, vacations taken and planned.  It was a wonderful time for all.

On Friday, May 17th Cindy attended the English as a Second Language Graduation from Suffolk County Community College for 3 special au pairs.  Host families and friends attended, too, to congratulate them.

March comes in like a lion!

It has been a pretty mild winter on Long Island, but March has already produced 2 snow storms.  Cold January temperatures are expected the rest of the week.  We have a saying in the USA:

There will be warmer,            Spring days very soon.

Be careful in the snow and ice.

Wet but fun Wading River Fall Festival

On Saturday, October 13th Wading River’s Fall Festival went on despite a rainy start.  Au Pair in America Suffolk County had a table that was well attended by local families.   The day began with the Zombie Parade!

Viviana from Colombia helped Community Counselor, Cindy Garruba explain what an Au Pair is and how APIA can help busy Suffolk County families with their childcare.  Viviana is a 2nd year au pair who is having a great experience in the USA.  She told families who stopped by about taking care of her host child, teaching him Spanish and how much she has learned about our culture while sharing hers with her host family.

The rain did stop and the event was enjoyed by all who attended.  Meet Suffolk County APIA Community Counselor, Cindy Garruba on Sunday, December 2nd at Stony Brook Village’s Holiday Festival.

Scarecrow Fun in Stony Brook Village

Visit Stony Brook Village this October to see all the scarecrows made by creative community groups.  Au Pair in America entered the contest with Au Pair Annie and friends.  Our Scarecrow is #107 just to the left of the Post Office!

Au Pair Annie is holding 8 au pairs from countries in our Suffolk County Au Pair in America cluster.  Her banner has the AIFS moto, “We Bring the World Together”.  Au Pair in America is a division of the American Institute of Foreign Study.  Check out AIFS here.

Mia from Croatia, Dana from Germany, Sara from Panama,  helped Community Counselor, Cindy Garruba, with the Scarecrow.  Their energy and creativity was lots of fun!
