A Movie in the Park

Twilight 005On the last Tuesday evening in August, some of the Suffolk County APIA au pairs met their Community Counselor, Cindy Garruba, at Harborfront Park in Pt. Jefferson Village.  It was a beautiful evening and a perfect night to watch Twilight Breaking Dawn Part I.   The Pt. School Registration is NOW!

Global Awareness Presentation by Bruna
Global Awareness Presentation by Bruna part of the UCLA Advantage Class course requirement.

August is lots of fun and it is easy to forget that September is quickly approaching.  On the right hand column of this blog there are links to all the education opportunities for au pairs in Suffolk County.  Make sure you register for your classes NOW!

Educare Au Pairs must take 12 credits or 160 hours of education at the college level for their year in America.  All other Au Pairs must take 6 credits or 80 hours of education at the college level for each year in America.  If you have questions, please email or call me!

Host families should assist their Au Pairs to make sure the classes fit into the schedule and works best for childcare and for your Au Pairs!

School is something that adds to the cultural exchange experience for the Au Pair and is a requirement of the Department of State for the program.

Sunflower Maze in Cutchogue!

sunflower mazeNorth Fork Potato Chips has created the area’s first sunflower maze in Cutchogue.

The local potato chip company, which is owned by Sidor Farm in Mattituck, opened the nearly 3-acre sunflower maze at the intersection of Route 48 and Cox Lane on Aug. 4.

Carol Sidor, who owns North Fork Potato Chips with her husband, Martin, said several varieties of sunflower seeds were planted in May to resemble the company’s logo.

“We use sunflower oil to make our chips,” Ms. Sidor said. “We grew two fields last year, but [Tropical Storm Irene] destroyed everything.”

The sunflower maze is open everyday at 10 a.m., weather permitting. Admission costs $10 for adults; $5 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for children age 3 and under.

Olympic Fun

APIA HF Olympics 024

APIA HF Olympics 025On Sunday, July 29th, Suffolk County Au Pair in America host families and au pairs gathered at their Community Counselor’s beach house for some Olympic fun.  The kids started by coloring some Olympic rings and creating their own flags. Games were played with host kids, au pairs and the parents.  Lots of giggles were heard as they filled up buckets of water in a relay race, dressed up in silly outfits during another race, did a ring toss and other games.   Time for a swim in the Long Island Sound, digging in the sand, walks on the beach and then a potluck dinner & BBQ.

APIA HF Olympics 027Everyone learned a little more about each other.  Experienced host parents chatted with new host parents.  New au pairs met long term au pairs.  Friendships grew between host kids.  After dessert & coffee, everyone headed home a little closer then when they arrived.
