Au Pair in America Earth Day Volunteer Activity

On April 20th, some of our Rhode Island Au Pairs celebrated Earth Day by volunteering to participate in the clean-up of WaterPlace Park in preparation for the upcoming WaterFire Season. They really enjoyed the activity, and later had the opportunity to attend an after-party at the Temple of Music at Roger Williams Park with Mayor Angel Tavares and other Earth Day Volunteers, for music, food and fun!

WaterFire events generally occur on select Saturday evenings starting at the end of May and ending in early October. The 2013 schedule should be announced soon, and can be found at www.Waterfire.org. WaterFire is always in need of volunteers to help during the season, and some au pairs have expressed interest in getting involved in additional volunteer activities. Those who are interested in volunteering for an upcoming Waterfire production must attend one of the following Orientations for new volunteers:
Upcoming WaterFire Orientations:

All of these volunteer activities will give our Rhode Island au pairs a sense of pride and “ownership” when we host our regional event in July; we will be inviting au pairs in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont to join us at a for a summer evening at WaterFire.

International Education Week – November 12 – 16, 2012

IEW

This important week, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Department of Education, is observed across the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world. It is always celebrated the week before the American Thanksgiving holiday. International Education Week is an opportunity for au pairs and exchange students to share with their host communities information about their culture, history, government, language, food, holidays school systems and traditions.

International Education week would be a great time for au pairs to volunteer to share their culture and customs with schools, libraries or other organizations in their local communities. American children and adults are always curious about other cultures and customs, and au pairs can provide them with a wealth of valuable, interesting information. For more information about International Education Week, visit their website: http://iew.state.gov/
Rhode Island Au pairs who would like assistance planning their presentation can refer to Au Pair in America’s Global Awareness Website or contact your community counselor.

Au Pairs who offer a cultural presentation during International Education Week will receive recognition on the IEW website and will receive a letter of appreciation from Au Pair in America.

Au Pairs Enjoy Newport's Cliff Walk

IMG_0738After a rainy week in Rhode Island, the sun came on brightly for our May 21 hike along Newport’s Cliff Walk.  Cliff Walk isIMG_0736IMG_0739  a 3.5 mile long path along cliffs – the Atlantic Ocean is on the left, and Newport’s most famous mansions are on the right. The view is absolutely gorgeous!  After our walk, many au pairs spent the rest of their day exploring Newport, our beautiful “city by the sea”.

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of another”.    -Charles Dickens

Au Pairs had the opportunity to practice yoga again at their November meeting.   Everyone brought non-perishable food items to the meeting so that a Thanksgiving Gift Basket could be donated to the Rhode Island Food bank.  Many thanks to au pairs and host families for your generosity!  A beautiful food basket was delivered to the RI Food Bank on Monday, November 22, along with a card and a photo of our group of au pairs.  The name of each au pair who attended our November meeting was placed in a drawing for a chance to win two tickets to the classic Charles Dickens play “A Christmas Carol” at Trinity Reperatory Theater. The winner of the tickets was Beverly, our newest au pair who just arrived from Brazil  — a great way to welcome Beverly to Rhode Island!  View more photos: http://www1.snapfish.com/snapfish/thumbnailshare/AlbumID=3318534017/a=13509975_13509975/

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ……On Thursday, November 25, most au pairs will be celebrating their very first Thanksgiving! The biggest holiday in America for family and feasting, Thanksgiving Day celebrates the traditional harvest after Pilgrims came to these shores to seek a new life. The very first Thanksgiving was observed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621, when weary settlers were joined by Wampanoag Indians in celebration of a traditional Old World English harvest festival. The Thanksgiving tradition continues today with turkey, savory stuffing and cranberry sauce, plus generous helpings of pumpkin pie and other desserts usually prepared using family recipes handed down from generation to generation.
