What is a Social Security Card?
Social security numbers are assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States.  As an au pair you are authorized to work in the United States under Department of Homeland Security regulations and you can apply for a social security card.  You need to be in the United States at least four days before applying for a social security card. Social security cards are required by banks and and some agencies.

How to get a Social Security Card
To apply for a social security number you will need to complete an Application for A Social Security Card (Form SS-5). In box 5 for citizenship information, you will check off ‘legal alien allowed to work’, and prove your identity and immigration status with the following documents: 

As an au pair, you do not need to provide an employment authorization letter since au pair is a category of J-1 visa participant who has authorization to work.
