Education Options

Au Pairs in the Upper Valley can meet their educational requirements in several ways. Be sure to check out education requirements for APIA at https://www.aupairinamerica.com/resources/aupairs.asp

  • Language studies at Rassias Center at Dartmouth offers ESL, Pronunciation, and other language classes (Spanish, German and French). Quarterly terms are 8 weeks and bring 36 hours of credit (= 6 credits). For more information contact: 603-646-2922 or http://rassias.dartmouth.edu/community/index.html
  • Dartmouth College: An au pair may approach a Dartmouth Professor to ask if she can audit a course. The professor would have to agree to provide a statement on college letterhead stating attendance and number of hours, so these may be counted as credit hours. Generally, a course quarter means 35-36 hours (= 5.5 – 6 credits). Be sure to confirm number of hours before taking the class. Check Dartmouth website: www.dartmouth.edu to obtain professors’ email and phone.
Smaller numbers of credits can be obtained at Dartmouth through Phys Ed or other electives. (Check FLIP program at the Dartmouth Gym.)
  • College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY offers weekend classes specifically geared to au pairs. Two weekends are needed to satisfy education requirement.  Intensive weeks brings 36-45 hours of credit (= 6 credits). Cost $310 ($360 late registration) includes meals and housing. www.silverbayaypaircourse.com.
  • Colby-Sawyer College (www.colby-sawyer.edu). Possible auditing of courses with permission of teacher and approriate certification of completion.
  • APIA Advantage – UCLA Extension Program:  Online course with volunteer component.  (www.uclaextension.edu/aupairs). This is a 19-week interdisciplinary online course for 6 credits. The program requires a Global Awareness project (or other approved volunteer activity) in your home community.
