We had a wonderful evening together at Franzi’s hostparents home in Chestnut Hill. Franzi is from Germany and an Extraordinaire aupair with a special qualification for childcare. She loves the program very much and takes care of two children in schoolage and a baby. Below you see her with the middle child.

Kayaking for our August cluster meeting

We met with our aupairs in our cluster today for a  kayaking event as our August cluster meeting at the Charles River.

Many new aupairs who just arrived last week had a chance to get connections to others and saw the Boston skyline for their first time. We had wonderful weather and it was dry and not too hot to paddle along the river through the salt and pepper bridge that connects Boston with Cambridge.

After signing in we waited for everybody to be there

For some aupairs it was also their last cluster meeting because they will go home after being an aupair for one successful year like Maria from Germany does in the Educare program. Or like Hannah from South Africa who will extend her stay as an aupair in the standart aupair program for another year in a different area of the US.

It was a wonderful meeting to share memories, exchange experiences to give out hints and tips for new aupairs and to enjoy the outdoors together. To see all pix please go to Kayaking August cluster meeting 2012.

Free concert series at the Emerson Park in Brookline

To come together with families and kids some of our aupairs joined the fantastic atmosphere of the free concert series in Brookline last Wednesday. Our aupairs introduced other families to our program and families had a chance to speak directly with questions to our aupairs.

Fun Ways to Eat and Cook Apples

P1030784 - Copy
Apples are great eaten raw and are ideal for school lunch boxes and snacks. You can bake, stew or microwave apples, then turn us into pies, tarts, crumbles and fritters.

Here are some wonderful ways to cook with your favourite apples:

Apple Cake
Peel, core and slice two apples. Prepare a packet butter cake according to directions, pour half the mixture into the cake tin, arrange apple slices evenly and top with remaining mixture. Bake according to directions allowing an extra 5-8 minutes.

Apple Crumble

Peel, core and slice 6-8 apples. Place apples in a lightly buttered baking dish with a 1/4 cup caster sugar and 2 tablespoons of sultanas. Top with toasted muesli and bake until apples are tender.

Yummy Apple Salad
Wash, core and roughly chop apples. Drizzle with lemon juice to prevent browning. Place in a bowl with sliced celery, lettuce , pecan nuts and toss with your favourite salad dressing.

July 18 ~National Ice Cream Day

Ice cream

Celebrate by enjoying a few scoops of your favorite flavor or by making your own ice cream at home. Here is a simple recipe. You can change it up by adding a little chocolate syrup, a few chocolate chips, or using a flavoring other than vanilla.

In a quart size zipper baggie, combine…

1 cup of whole milk or half and half

2 tablespoons of sugar

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

In a gallon size zipper baggie…

Fill ½ way with ice cubes

Add 1/3 cup of rock salt (if you don’t have rock salt you can use table salt or kosher salt)

Seal the small baggie carefully and place the inside of the large bag. Seal the large bag and shake the bags until you can see the mixture thickening (about 5 minutes.) It will be cold to hold, so you may want to carefully pass it back and forth between yourself and a partner.  Remove the small baggie and wipe the top off (to remove salt water,) unzip and enjoy!
