The following DC-area classes are approved for our cluster and count towards your State Department education requirement.
Language Classes
- Georgetown University’s Continuing Studies English program (Intermediate English, Advanced Business Communication and Writing, and TOEFL Prep classes)
- International Language Institute’s English Programs (Intensive, Semi-intensive, and TOEFL Prep classes) & other foreign languages; 10% tuition discount for APIA au pairs
- LADO International Institute’s English courses (Intensive, Semi-intensive, and TOEFL Prep classes and Business English and Idioms Workshops) and Spanish courses; 10% tuition discount for APIA au pairs
- Mentora College’s Intensive ESL Program and others; 30% scholarship discount for APIA au pairs
- Virginia International University’s Non-Intensive ESL classes (includes one-day Museum Trip classes held most Saturdays for 0.5 CEUs each class)
General Interest Classes
- Anne Arundel Community College’s Au Pair Class: Preventing the Back Home Blues (Saturday, May 7th from 9:15 am-4:45 pm; earn 6 hours of credit; $104 with lunch included in the fee)
- Graduate School USA’s Weekend and Evening Courses (90 courses in writing, graphic arts, design, economics, foreign languages, horticulture, etc. )
- L’Academie de Cuisine (Au Pair cooking classes held in the daytime and evening)
- Levine School of Music
- Montgomery College (must pay non-resident fee)
- Prince George’s Community College (must pay out-of-state tuition)
- University of the Virgin Islands International Program (Sign Language, DC history and culture, Psychology, photography, Equestrian skills, mixology, and more.)
- Washington Conservatory of Music
Online Class
- UCLA Extension’s American Studies

Note: This is the only on-line class approved by the State Department. It is only open to APIA Au Pairs.
The following programs are considered “weekend/travel” classes* by the State Department. Only one can count towards your education requirement. Read the program descriptions carefully; some do not include housing and/or transportation.
- Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Learning Across America* (Spring 2016 classes for DC-area au pairs include trips to Chicago, Montreal, Nashville, New Orleans, Niagara Falls, or Philadelphia/Amish Country. More details here. Summer 2016 trip to San Francisco.)
- Learning to Live Your American Dream* (Weekend classes in Boston, Chicago, Tampa, San Francisco, and San Diego)
- College of St. Rose’s Silver Bay Au Pair Courses*
