Education Overview:
Year one requirement is:
- 6 credits for Standard and Extraordinaire au pairs
- 12 credits for EduCare.
For second year au pairs:
- A 6 month extension has half the requirement in her second year (3 for standard and extraordinaire / 6 for EduCare)
- For a 9 or 12 month extension the requirement is the same as the 1st year.
1 credit = 12-15 hours
1 CEU = 10 hours
1 hour = 1 hour
We ask APs to complete 80 hours of instruction (Standard & Extraordinaire), but will accept as little as 72 hours for completion of the requirement. EduCares aim for 160 hours, but we will accept as little as 144.

A good option for APs with decent English skills that may not be drivers or those that have work schedules that change often. This is the ONLY online class allowed because they also have to do community involvement activities. The online portion of the class is worth 4 credits, the community involvement portion is worth 2 credits. Together they make the 6 credit requirements for $500. It tends to be offered Jan- May, March – August, Sept –February. It runs for 19 weeks and APs and CCs get emails when registration opens.
Community involvement includes these activities during their course:
- Global Awareness presentation. This can take time to set up because they need to rely on the teachers schedule AND the holidays are coming. They should set it up asap and request their supplies to enhance their presentation. Boxes of supplies need 2 weeks for delivery.
- No set number of hours needed here, but they need something. A cluster volunteer activity can count.
- Cultural activities. This is a list of American things they have experienced….Holidays, museums, and cultural fairs are easy choices.
The tracking form needs signatures for CA presentation and volunteering. The Community involvement form needs to be returned to me before their extension deadline to get the 2 credits towards their education requirement.
Weekend Classes: Each ap is allowed one for half her education requirement. Two can be allowed, but only if she has a reason and you and I discuss it ahead of time. Reach out to Allison Malino for the most current list of approved weekend classes. It is important to know that for a class that requires travel, the HF pays for the class, but the AP pays for transportation, food, and lodging.

City College of San Francisco has a lot of non-credit FREE classes which a lot of San Francisco Au Pairs take advantage of. They have campuses (Ocean, Mission & Downtown) which are all an easy walk from BART. This might be an option for some of the AP’s living in the east bay.
Here is the link to Non-Credit Classes which the AP will need to register for in advance:
