On November 1st, Au Pair in America was honored to be a part of one of the most exciting events in New York City: the annual NYC Marathon, or as New Yorkers call it “the best day in New York City.” People from around the world unite to support the marathon participants.
This year, the Department of State arranged for J-1 visa programs to volunteer at the marathon at one of the points along the route, handing out water to the runners as they passed by different fluid stations. We were thrilled to have almost 90 au pairs from our agency volunteer, and enjoy an unforgettable and unique experience.
“We were at the end in Central Park all the day until the last runners arrived. It was a lot of fun!” – Sofia from Argentina
Being able to be part of this exciting, fun, and busy day in New York City was very rewarding. It was also tiring, as even if you’re not running, all volunteers still had to wake up early, set up, and be ready. It’s a different way of enjoying the race: you had the advantage of seeing the runners, being their favorite person in the world as you hand them water, and just being there for a good cause makes the sacrifice and motivation that much more interesting.
Some of our au pairs shared their photos and some great feedback about their experience. These pictures really speak for themselves.
