Robin Leon and Mary Stankovich are Au Pair in America community counselors in Austin, Texas. They arranged a shoe collection, dance lesson and desserts to celebrate J Day 2017 with Texas au pairs, host families and special guests. Here, Robin shares highlights and photos of their fun-filled festivities.
Austin’s Au Pair in America group had a great J Day event! We took a fun dance lesson at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio and learned some Texas line dances, the Electric Slide and some Salsa moves. Our group included two Summer Work and Travel participants from Turkey, who found out about our event and took the bus to participate! After burning all that energy on the dance floor, we rewarded ourselves with some sweet treats.
In honor of J Day, our au pairs and host families collected over 50 pairs of shoes to be donated to local people in need.
J Day is an important day for everyone to think about the benefits and importance of international exchange. Thanks to Robin and Mary for putting such a great event together for exchange participants in the Austin area to get together, give back and enjoy each others company trying something new.
Like these Texas au pairs, we can all have some fun organizing and attending events to celebrate the day. Community service and special events in honor of J Day are a fantastic way to bring people together to share each other’s culture, have some fun and make a difference in communities all across the United States.
