On Sunday, January 20, 2019, Au Pair in America’s Houston Cluster worked the GRB refueling station inside the George R. Brown Convention Center for the Chevron Houston Marathon. The Chevron Houston Marathon is the largest single-day sporting event in Houston with over 250,000 participants, volunteers and spectators participating annually.
Thirteen au pairs from Au Pair in America gathered on Sunday at the Convention Center to set up tables and mix, pour and distribute Gatorade and water to thirsty runners. The most vital and important part of the day, of course, was encouraging and congratulating the runners at the finish of the race!
The au pairs had a wonderful experience supporting their community and volunteering at this fun event. Here’s what a few of them had to say:
Jasmin, Au Pair from Germany:
“I wouldn’t have expected there to be that many people running the marathon! It was nice helping them after their run, even if we just gave them water and Gatorade.”
Annika, Au Pair from Germany:
“It was a really fun experience volunteering at the marathon! I was impressed how many people ran the marathon. It was a great feeling to be part of such a huge event!”
Isabelle, Au Pair from Brazil:
“Volunteering at the marathon was an amazing experience where we could help, support and congratulate the runners. Also, it was such an inspiration to see how many people of different sexes, ages and conditions were running. Next year I want to be one of them!”
Cinthia, Au Pair from Brazil:
“Being a part of the Houston Marathon as a volunteer was a pleasure and very fun because I could experience an important and exciting cultural event of the city.”
Bertina, Au Pair from Mexico:
“Volunteering in the Houston Marathon was really exciting because you get to be at the end of the line and the runners get to be served with water and Gatorade. Seeing a lot of runners after the end of the line made me realize that giving up is not an option and the best we can do for them is offer water and celebrate for the victory. Volunteering is a great experience because you get to be part of the community and have fun at the same time in one the great events in Houston.”
