Au Pair in America host mothers help bring the world together by opening their homes to au pairs from around the world. Although they deserve year-round recognition for all that they do, Mother’s Day calls for a little extra appreciation! Many au pairs from around the world celebrated their American host mothers this week by writing touching and loving tributes.
For Mother’s Day, au pairs from South Africa, Germany, Costa Rica, and Brazil share why they love their host mothers below:

“Happy Mother’s Day means also Happy Host Mother’s Day! I am very thankful to have such an amazing, caring and wonderful host mom… everything she does is filled with passion and love. Moreover, she is a wonderful mom to her two precious children. She loves them unconditionally, and she has a way of making everything fun, thoughtful and from the heart. I am so thankful for her trust and the way we can talk and laugh about everything. She is such an amazing mom to her family and a wonderful host mom to me. Thank you for everything!”
Olyvia, Au Pair from South Africa Hosted in Minnesota
“[My host mom] Alyssa has always gone far beyond her duties of being a host mom to ensure that I’m always happy and safe. She’s an amazing mother to four amazing kids, and they’re all very lucky to have her, as am I. From the moment I arrived, I felt a complete sense of comfort when being with her, and I still do to this day. I couldn’t have been placed with a better host family than the one I have now. Alyssa has played a huge role in my life during the past two years and has shaped me into the person I am today. I am forever grateful for her and her family and couldn’t be happier with my au pair experience. Happy ‘Thanks for Being Like a Mom to Me Day,’ Alyssa!”
Diana, Au Pair from Costa Rica Hosted in Pennsylvania
“I love my host mom; she is the best. Since day one she has been like another mom for me. She always has the best advice. She is always there for me when I’m not feeling that good, and she always knows how to make me feel better. She teaches me every day how to be perseverant and work hard to get what you want. She always helps me when I have trouble with some words in English, and she is always nice when she has to correct me. I know I can always count on her. She is for now and forever my mom in the United States.”
Anelise, Au Pair from Brazil Hosted in Virginia
“I love my host mom because she is a mother that I choose to be with. She teaches me every day how to be grateful for life and everything that life brings, how to be a better person, and she has the best American hugs ever. What is fascinating about her is how she can see the best in things even when the situation is bad. She makes life easier, even for a foreign au pair. This year (2019) I will not have my mom around to hug and kiss [on Mother’s Day], but I will have a mom – a host mom – to celebrate.”
Stefani, Au Pair from Brazil Hosted in Washington
“Jess is authentic, really happy, and kind, and she has one of the biggest hearts in the world. She has been a friend besides being [my host mom]. We got along the first second we first met. We’ve been sharing our culture with recipes from our countries and language by learning new words and sayings every day. I love living here and having her, Vin and Quinn as a family! I just love them and could not be happier. Happy Mother’s Day, Jess!”
