Helping au pairs feel right at home in US

Remembering 9/11

9-11-01candleangellargeMost Americans remember where they were the moment the planes hit the twin towers, the pentagon and went down in the field in Pennsylvania.  I remember the au pairs who were in my cluster at that time.

I was proud of every au pair in my cluster on that day and the days following.  They were just as stunned as every American, their families and friends at home were worried that they were in harm’s way and the children in their care were scared.  Not one of young woman in my cluster in Suffolk County was too scared to stay, too scared to comfort their host children or continue with their duties.  They responded with compassion, bravery and were an inspiration to me.  Young women from all over the world stepped up at that difficult time, they spread cultural understanding and world peace through their example.   Thank you.

Today we remember that tragic day with acts of kindness.  We hold each other closer, care more deeply and do for others.  Remember to live in the moment, care about your fellow human beings and give to each other!

4th of July Fun!

Long Island’s 2013 4th of July Guide: Fireworks, Festivities, Food & More!

Long Islanders gather together for some of the largest celebrations in the country. With fast-approaching festivities and fireworks, don’t miss out on the fun – …

The nation’s favorite major summer holiday is just around the corner – that’s right, it’s almost Independence Day! Americans celebrate the Fourth of July in accordance to the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia – the former thirteen states declared their freedom from British governance. July 4, 1777, the one year anniversary of our independence,  was celebrated with music, ringing bells, bonfires, and fireworks. Ever since, Americans continue the tradition in celebrating their freedom by taking part in some fun and entertaining events in commemoration.
Long Islanders gather together for some of the largest celebrations in the country. These fast-approaching festivities include fairs, carnivals and festivals to concerts and sports games to picnics, cruises, and of course the stars of the day – FIREWORKS! Don’t miss out on the fun – check out what’s happening near you and across Long Island!

Olympic Fun

APIA HF Olympics 024

APIA HF Olympics 025On Sunday, July 29th, Suffolk County Au Pair in America host families and au pairs gathered at their Community Counselor’s beach house for some Olympic fun.  The kids started by coloring some Olympic rings and creating their own flags. Games were played with host kids, au pairs and the parents.  Lots of giggles were heard as they filled up buckets of water in a relay race, dressed up in silly outfits during another race, did a ring toss and other games.   Time for a swim in the Long Island Sound, digging in the sand, walks on the beach and then a potluck dinner & BBQ.

APIA HF Olympics 027Everyone learned a little more about each other.  Experienced host parents chatted with new host parents.  New au pairs met long term au pairs.  Friendships grew between host kids.  After dessert & coffee, everyone headed home a little closer then when they arrived.

Leap Day – February 29 2012

leapday‘Leap Day’ is February 29, which is an extra  day added during Leap Year, making the year 366 days long – and not 365 days, like a common (normal) year.

Every 4 years is a Leap Year in our modern calendar.

Leap Year the movieTraditions and folklore

Leap Day as a concept has existed for more than 2000 years, and is still associated with age-old traditions, folklore and superstition. http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/historical/a/leap_year.htm

It’s a popular day for women to propose marriage. http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/historical/a/leap_year.htm     The Movie Leap Year starring Amy Adams (2010) is about this tradition.  Her character, Anna Brady travels to Dublin, Ireland to propose to her boyfriend Jeremy on February 29, leap day, because, according to Irish tradition, a man who receives a marriage proposal on a leap day must accept it.  Maybe you can rent the movie  it is a fun romantic comedy!

Brief history of the Leap Day

Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun. If we didn’t add a day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days!

The ancient Roman Calendar added an extra month every few years to maintain the correct seasonal changes.  Julius Caesar implemented a new calendar – the Julian Calendar – in 45 BCE (Before Common Era) with an extra day added every 4 years. At the time, Leap Day was February 24, because February was the last month of the year.

The 4th of July is the USA’s Birthday!

Happy birthday america

On July 4, 1776, Americans claimed our independence from Britain and Democracy was born. Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the “land of the free and the home of the brave” so they can begin their American Dream.

The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people. Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate that freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings. Through the Internet we are learning about and communicating with people of different nations, with different languages and different races throughout the world. Bringing the world closer with understanding and knowledge can only benefit all nations.

Au Pair in America is dedicated to cultural exchange and hopes all our host families and au pairs are celebrating this truly American holiday together!  Enjoy your barbeques, picnics, and all the fireworks!

There are parades in most communities this weekend, check your local paper for the one closest to you!

EduCare – Childcare for School Age Children

Weekly News June 9th 2011

       EduCare Works for Many Families!

The summer months bring many au pairs and the year’s highest concentration of EduCare arrivals.  While we all know that EduCare companions have a different work schedule and education benefits than  au pairs, what may not be so widely known is that they also participate in a unique orientation program while in Stamford.  Both the content and the delivery are tailored to the characteristics of the au pairs and their host families, specifically to working with older host children.  It is important that the EduCare au pairs attend these orientations. In general the EduCare orientation groups tend to be smaller than the standard groups and the participants almost always have a uniformly high level of English proficiency, both receptive and spoken.  These two factors contribute to more universal participation and to more nuanced and in depth group conversations.  There is often “give and take” between the participants around cultural and child care topics, rather than simply responding to the group leader.  In these groups, it is not unusual for the EduCares to question each other or to challenge the opinions of other group members.  The discourse is at a higher and more inclusive level and there are more opportunities for critical thinking and analysis. globe-book
