  • New travel requirements for visiting Canada – ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)Canada has implemented an entry requirement called an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Starting March 15, 2016, au pairs who do not normally need a visitor’s visa to travel to Canada will need to get an eTA before flying to or transiting through Canada. This entry requirement applies to foreign nationals who are visa-exempt and who travel to Canada by air. Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travelers with a valid visa. You do not need to get an ETA if you travel by land or sea. From March 15, 2016, the eTA will be mandatory and needed before boarding a flight to Canada. The application process takes a few minutes and costs CA$7. The eTA is attached electronically to your passport and remains valid for either five years or to the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first. Each traveler must submit an application. There is no need to apply through a third party at an inflated cost.  In most cases the eTA will be approved within minutes of applying and is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.

In order to apply for the ETA, you will need a valid passport from a visa exempt country, a credit card (visa, master card or American Express and a valid email address. For a link to the information on the website for the Canadian consulate, please go to: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp
