Welcome to Camp Au Pair in America!

When kids are out of school for the summer, it doesn’t take long for them to become bored and sometimes that leads to sibling squabbles and mischief. Even though they don’t realize it, they are usually missing routine and predictability in their daily schedule. One solution is to make fun plans to keep them busy!

Each week this summer we will share a different Camp Au Pair theme. These weekly themes are designed to give you ideas to keep your host kids occupied and engaged all summer long. They will also be learning. (But shhhh, don’t tell them that part.) Check back each Friday, for the next week’s theme. This gives you a chance to make plans and gather materials for the next week. For each theme there will be crafts, games, snacks and activities. You can just use these ideas or add your own and customize the themes to fit the ages and interests of your host children.

Here are the themes you can look forward to:

  • Nature Exploration
  • Art Experiences
  • Under the Sea
  • Science (STEM)
  • Bugs & Butterflies
  • Cars and Trucks
  • Backyard Safari
  • Dinosaurs
  • Explore the World
  • Outer Space
  • Pirate Adventures
  • Princesses & Knights

Check out Summer Fun & Summer Holidays pin boards for even more ideas.

If you get some great pictures doing these activities with your host kids, please send those to your community counselor. We love to share your accomplishments and inspire other au pairs!

Let’s make this an amazing summer!

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Return Flights Home

  • I am returning home and am required to have a negative COVID test result to board my flight, what happens if the test is not received in time? Prior to leaving for the airport, if you are still waiting for your results,  contact the lab directly to see what can be done about receiving the results more quickly. In some cases, the customer service rep can move things along and get the results pushed through. If you are stil unable to get the results back in time, please call the APIA Stamford office or contact the emergency line (800-928-7247) after office hours/weekend so that your flight can be rescheduled as needed.

  • Can I get tested at the airport ? Yes, some US airports offer COVID testing on site. These links list the US airports that are currently offering testing on site:  Travel/Leisure and Afar. After locating the airport, go to the airport’s main website for additional information. Please be reminded that COVID testing requires accurate planning in advance so that the results are returned in an appropriate time frame. Often the testing at the airport can return results same day at a higher cost than most local testing found in your communities.
  • My home country requires a COVID test and/or quarantine on arrival, is the cost of the test/quarantine covered? Please note that Cultural Insurance Services International/Aetna only covers the cost of testing when prescribed by a medical professional and does not cover tests as part of travel or quarantine requirements.
  • I have additional baggage or overweight bags, can APIA pay for that cost? APIA is not responsible for baggage costs or excess weight for bags. This should be part of your planning process when getting ready for their return home.
  • When will I receive my flight? To avoid airline cancellations and the need to rebook a flight, APIA is currently booking flights about 3-4 weeks prior to the departure date.
  • Travel Insurance refund? If an au pair purchased stand-alone travel insurance and no longer needs the travel month insurance, there is a possibility for a refund of the travel month insurance payment with advanced notice please email apiainsurance@aifs.com for consideration. **Please note a refund in travel month insurance means the au pair would lose the upgrade baggage coverage.

On account of COVID-19 several modifications have been made on a temporary basis to accommodate program requirements for au pairs.

What is Global Awareness?

What is Global Awareness?

The Global Awareness program brings expanded educational and cultural opportunities to the forefront for au pairs. It gives them the opportunity to share their culture with others.

How do au pairs get involved?

Au Pairs can volunteer in pre-school, elementary and middle school classrooms. They have the opportunity to share their culture, customs and language with young American children. The mission of this volunteer experience is to bring multi-cultural understanding into the classrooms and help children form positive first impressions of people from other countries. Visit the Get Involved page of our website for all the info you need to get started.

Is Global Awareness just for schools?

No. Au pairs have done presentations for scout groups, at birthday parties and at children’s story times.

Are you interested in scheduling a Global Awareness presentation?

Teachers, parents or others who would like to schedule a presentation, please visit the Global Awareness website for more information and a contact link.

How can Global Awareness help host parents?

Global Awareness offers a webinar series for host parents. The goal is to increase their cultural awareness, improve communication with their au pair and ensure the most successful exchange possible. Your community counselor can provide you with the webinar schedule and how to register.
