Camp Au Pair: Kids in the Kitchen

Camp Au Pair is in the kitchen next week! As always, have a discussion with your host family about allergens and any food preferences they may have before beginning. This is a great resource for you to work with collaboratively with your host parents!

Visit a local farm, farmer’s market or artisan shop. Some allow you to order online and pick up on site. Check with your host parents first and always practice social distancing as directed by local, state and federal guidelines.

  • Take a virtual trip to the White House kitchen! Start at the 30 minute mark.
  • The American Egg Board has partnered with Discovery Education to bring modern egg farms into today’s classrooms through Virtual Egg Farm Field Trips. Join America’s egg farmers in exploring their farms! See where your eggs come from, then make an egg dish!

  • Around the World Cookbook for Kids. Featuring more than 50 recipes for kid-friendly dishes from different countries, American Girl Around the World Cookbook will inspire young chefs to taste and learn about new cuisines while perfecting kitchen skills.
  • Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make you a Pie, by Edna Lewis. Edna Lewis was a prominent Black chef who championed the South’s regional cuisine, fresh ingredients, and farm-to-table before it was cool. Illustrations along with stories and songs about Edna and food guide kids through this book. Plus, there are five special recipes sprinkled throughout.
  • The Complete Baking Book for Young Chefs.Want to make your own soft pretzels? Or wow your friends with homemade empanadas? What about creating a showstopping pie? Maybe some chewy brownies after school? From breakfast to breads, from cookies to cakes (yes, even cupcakes!), learn to bake it all here. You can do this, and it’s fun!

Around the World in 80 Days – Brazilian Lemonade

Let’s get cooled off with some Brazilian Lemonade!

Brazilian Lemonade Recipe

Ingredients: 

  • 4 juicy limes
  • 4 cups cold water 
  • 1 can sweet condensed milk 
  • Ice 

Instructions: 

  1. Wash your limes and peel two of them. Cut them into 8 wedges and remove the white pith.
  2. Combine the lime wedges and water in your blender and pulse for a few seconds (10  seconds maximum). 
  3. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing on the pulp to extract all the juice.
  4. Return the liquid to the blender and add the sweet condensed milk. Blend until creamy and frothy. 
  5. Serve immediately with ice!

And there you have it — Brazilian lemonade!

Cooking With Kids!

Cooking with children can help with many skills and encourage them to become an adventurous eater! It engages the senses, builds mathematics and critical thinking skills, explores science, build language skills, you can share your culture or learn about a new one together through food.

Check out these great tips for kitchen safety!

Ready to cook up a bit of fun in the kitchen? Check out these great ideas! Consider making animal pancakes for breakfast or a fun snack! Or a birdhouse sandwich for lunch!

How about a tropical fruit snack plate?  Or a fun popcorn mix? Or try some PB&J faux sushi?  Create a fruit filled rainbow!

Make your own granola bars! Or jellyfish sandwiches!

Make Your Own Playdough

Play dough is the perfect modeling material for children. Their small hands can pat, poke, pinch, roll and knead it into many shapes. Keep it in an airtight container to use another day, or let it air dry into favorite shapes.

Measure 2 cups of flour, one cup of salt and 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar into a bowl. Add 1/4 cup of oil to one cup of water in a separate bowl then add the mixture to the dry ingredients. For colored play dough, squeeze 10-20 drops of food coloring into the water before you add it to the mixture. Cook the dough at low heat in a wide pan, stirring constantly until it becomes rubbery. Remove the dough from the heat and knead it for a few minutes. When it cools the kids can play too!

Field trips!

  • Make a plan of food creativity! Check out your pantry and fridge first, then plan a trip to the grocery store to get needed items. Have your host kids help prepare the list. Think about the layout of the store, make your list so you can walk around and easily find things.
  • Perhaps part of your food experience week is going out to a local eatery and trying something new or sharing food from your home country.
  • Krispy Kreme has their stores set up so you can watch the donuts being made! Watch

    thedonuts being made, wear a fun Krispy Kreme hat and then eat a fresh, hot donut! Call ahead to get an idea of what time is best. You can even sign yourself up for their rewards program and get a free donut!

  • Visit a local farm or farmer’s market.
  • Check out the Food Network’s kids cooking and baking shows.

For more creative cooking ideas, try these under the sea yogurt snacks! How about some American flag brownies? Make your own mason jar “lunchables”. Try your hand at making butter in a jar.

Try some theme foods! Outer space snacks are out of this world! Edible sailboats are fun too! Rainbow weather cloud graham crackers are guaranteed to make you smile! Speaking of graham crackers, try these awesome under the sea graham crackers!  Do you have older kids? Try using marshmallows to build structures!

Do you want to build a snowman snack? Want a healthier option? Try making salads in a jar! Everyone loves mac-n-cheese, try making it in a crockpot! Taco cupcakes are fun! How about PB&J sushi rolls? Banish snacktime boredom with these fun ideas! Create a Very Hungry Caterpillar plate! Turn hard boiled eggs into chicks! Try using M&M’s to get to know your host kids if you are a new arrival!
