Turkey Trot and Culture Share Zoom – November 2020

Au pairs and host kids did some walking last month!  Together we donated our time and money to Northwest Harvest, an APIA local partner for over a decade, which helps to supply our food banks around WA.

Congrats to Camila from Brazil, living in Lacey, and her host kids for winning our Top Turkey of the Turkey Trot Contest!  She and her family walked a total of 575,225 steps in November. Way to go…and they are not done yet…checking their pedometers this month too!  Thank you to everyone who went walking!  The walks are clutch about now.
And on a zoom call, au pairs shared a bit of their culture with the group and asked some questions about childcare and education.  Low key and just us.  Attached is a shot of some of our lovelies in this zoom (black background shot) and of me, in perfect zoom spirit with eyes closed.  Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday.

Hairnets on their Heads and Giving in their Hearts

Below is a gorgeous group of giving girls.  This past weekend was beautiful outside and here in Seattle, we wait for those sunny, winter days.  But this crew went inside and for their precious time off, helped pack thousands of pounds of oats for those hungry around WA state at NW Harvest.  It is not the most popular of our cluster events, but it is a favorite for those who feel its true meaning and impact on the community this global village shares together for one or two years. In this picture are representatives from Bolivia, Mexico, Brazil, Austria, Germany, China, South Africa and Colombia helping out the US – one person at a time.

Au Pairs Learn the Art of Giving Back – Gates Foundation – Feb 2019

Au pairs gathered from a few clusters to hear about some of the amazing things happening around the globe in the name of the Gates Foundation.  From the innovative design of green toilets competing for attention in Europe, to the stoves made on Vashon Island, WA, inspiration abounds.  Relying on data, the Gates family educates us about all the progress in the world with regard to disease and poverty.  There really is so much to be excited about as a world citizen.  We closed our time together talking about the APIA Explorer program and ways in which we might individually help our local community…enter the next cluster event stage right as we soon head to NW Harvest in March…

Hairnets on their Heads and Sunshine in their Hearts – March 2018

Below is a gorgeous group of giving girls.  This past weekend was beautiful outside and here in Seattle, we wait for those sunny, winter days.  But this crew went inside and for their precious time off, helped pack thousands of pounds of peas for those hungry around WA state at NW Harvest.  It is not the most popular of our cluster events, but it is a favorite for those who feel its true meaning and impact on the community this global village shares together for one or two years.

Carrots Just In Time for Spring – APs Volunteer for NW Harvest

We were few on a Saturday afternoon when many others were resting or shopping or traveling, but we had a lot of fun.  This dedicated crew came to NW Harvest to pack nearly 5000 pounds of carrots for hungry families around WA state.  That translated to close to 4000 meals to food banks in and around Seattle.

These ladies shared the social services found in their home countries and we discussed the US system.  I do believe nothing was solved that day, but families were fed and that is action enough!  Proud of these women for sharing their valuable free time to contribute to this cause.  I certainly hope they are proud too.  Even in a hair net.

NW Harvest Helping – March 2016

Our au pair community is strong and mighty and we always have a meal.  We are lucky that way and learned about the thousands of hungry in our state of WA, helping NW Harvest make a difference in a few lives by working in the warehouse on a Saturday.  These strong ladies from 10 countries packed up 5,800 pounds of corn that would equate to 4,461 meals around our state.  APIA was thrilled to be a part of something bigger than any one of us that day.  Thanks, North West Harvest!

Giving Back – May 2015

A group of au pairs gathered at the NW Harvest warehouse yesterday to give back to their host community.  1 out of every  7 person in Washington is hungry.  We are ranked 15th in the entire U.S.  NW Harvest and APIA have partnered for a few years now lending a hand to help these statistics.  We worked hard packing 5,368 pounds of edamame which would mean 4,129 meals for families around the state.  The weather outside was gorgeous and au pairs had worked hard all week, so it was very special that these strong, caring young women took time from their cherished weekend to work so hard.  Thank you, ladies!

APIA, Seahawks, Northwest Harvest Battle Hunger – November 2013

Close to 30 au pairs from around the globe gathered around Seahawks stadium for the (now infamous game) against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Our selfless ladies, held signs, spoke with fans and gave up a day off to help the 1-5 families in Washington state that find themselves hungry.  WA is the 15th hungriest state in the U.S.  That day, APIA au pairs and other volunteers collected over $14,000 for the cause!

A FEW THINGS ABOUT NORTHWEST HARVEST

  • They are a statewide hunger response network.
  • They distribute food to more than 360 food banks, meal programs and high need schools throughout Washington state.
  • Last year, they distributed

o   More than 30 million pounds of food,

o   Which is 1.9 million meals a month.

  • All of the food and money collected at the Seahawks Tackle Hunger event will stay in Washington.

Thank you to all the APIA au pairs who now call WA their home and who donated a Sunday to this important cause with Northwest Harvest.
