GETTING A VIRGINIA DRIVER’S LICENSE

By Virginia state law, au pairs should apply for a VA driver’s license within 60 days of their arrival in the state. Appointments are not necessary to go to the DMV.

To obtain a VA Driver’s License, an au pair must have the following documents:

  1. Passport
  2. DS2019
  3. I-94
  4. Driver’s license from home country
  5. Two proofs of address
    • The envelope your Social Security Card comes in and all the contents
    • A bank statement
    • Rematch and year 2 au pairs see note below for alternate proof options

Rematch and Year 2 Au Pairs Only

Au pairs who have rematched or are extending with new host families, you will need to change your address with USPS and request a reprinted DS-2019 with your current host family name and address.

  • DS-2019 Address Update Request – You will need to show the updated DS-2019 form and you can use the envelope it is mailed to you from APIA in as a proof of residency item.
  • USPS Change of Address  – The change of address confirmation or a piece of mail with the forwarding sticker can be used as proof of residency. 

Reciprocity Agreements

Virginia DMV will issue a driver’s license without requiring knowledge and road skills testing for residents of the following countries. Au pairs from these countries may be able to skip the testing process after having their foreign licenses verified. Information on that process can be found here.
