Host Family and J Day 2016

We had another big turn out for the APIA host family day at Lincoln Park this year in Seattle (over 150 people) and yesterday we combined an Au Pair In America 30th birthday with a celebration of J Day where au pairs from several of our 60 countries represented made dishes from their countries and families donated over 30 pairs of shoes for the Goodwill.

Cultural exchanges have always been at the heart of our US foreign policy and the State Department remains steadfast in its support of intercultural friendships through the J-1 visa programs.

“J Day is about celebrating the exchange visitors who enrich our local communities each year.  They not only bring the world to our hometowns and boost our local economies – but also give back to our communities in meaningful ways.”

To our host families and their children, we want to thank you for opening your home to a virtual stranger, for helping your au pair with her English, her driving, her homesickness.  For trusting us to find her and to support your program together.  Hosting takes courage and an open mind.

And to our au pairs, we also want to thank you for traveling across the world for this program. For trusting us to find you a warm, loving home. 85% of last year’s au pairs nationwide said their au pair year was the greatest year of their life thus far. We thank you for allowing us to be on this journey with you.  A journey that also takes great amounts of courage and an open mind.

Baking our Wishes at 425 Degrees – Jan 2016

Our au pair cluster – and a big portion of our au pair cluster! – came to my home last Sunday to make some 2016 wishes, symbolically bake those wishes into a topping and eat those delicious 2016 wish pizzas.  After this ridiculousness, we just talked about taxes.  It was just a fun party with girlfriends in the new year.  Thanks to all those who brought a dish and came this past Sunday.  That is a fine group, right there.

Another Lovely Host Family Day with Over 150 of Our Closest Friends – July 2015

Our host family and au pair community came together today to meet one another, share international cuisines, do some cross-cultural scavenger hunting and play a lively game of water balloon toss (au pair/host child teams!).  These, once strangers, are now family and we, as counselors, are so privileged to witness this beautiful program in action.

Baby Games and Taxes – January 2015

Our cluster of au pairs gathered in my home this past Sunday for a customized webinar by one of the official APIA trainers.  The APs were polled and selected the topic, “Activity Time – Infants and Toddlers”.  We got great ideas on how to entertain our host babies (keeping them safe above all), using puppets and potato stamps with toddlers and making wonderful Valentine’s projects with children of all ages.  We then took a snack break to get to know one another more and circled back again to talk about TAXES.  A nice discussion about a complex topic…with more on this to come…

Au Pair In America Ascends our Local Volcano – September 2014

Over 60 au pairs and the APIA counselors of WA climbed to the top of Paradise on Mt Rainier this past weekend.  The hike was short, but hot this weekend (same weekend last year was hailing!).  We chased chipmunks, smelled wild flowers and made new friends.  Thanks to all who came and made our community day together so special.

APIA Community Day – July 2014

A very spectacular day for our APIA community.  Over 125 people – host families and au pairs – tattooed the children, threw flyers around a beach, colored the world, sang a happy birthday, scavenger hunted the cultural way, ate dishes from around the globe and ended our fun with a good ole’ water balloon toss with kids and their sweet care givers.  What fun!  Thank you all who attended and made this day so wonderful!

Crafting, team building and wishes – March 2014

Our cluster gathered this month in my home to really get to know each other better and talk about ourselves and this magical exchange experience.  We began with ice breakers…it IS hard to pass an orange with no hands; moved on to crafting St Patty’s Day necklaces for the host kids (and ourselves!); did a scavenger hunt of “find a person who…”; shared our green and rainbowed international dishes; and ended hearing about each other’s wishes for their year in the U.S.  These young women have traveled far (from France, Mexico, South Africa, Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Panama, Colombia, Italy, Sweden and Spain) to travel so deeply within themselves.  I’m blessed to be a part of their journey.photo-45photo-47photo-46photo-48

APIA, Seahawks, Northwest Harvest Battle Hunger – November 2013

Close to 30 au pairs from around the globe gathered around Seahawks stadium for the (now infamous game) against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Our selfless ladies, held signs, spoke with fans and gave up a day off to help the 1-5 families in Washington state that find themselves hungry.  WA is the 15th hungriest state in the U.S.  That day, APIA au pairs and other volunteers collected over $14,000 for the cause!

A FEW THINGS ABOUT NORTHWEST HARVEST

  • They are a statewide hunger response network.
  • They distribute food to more than 360 food banks, meal programs and high need schools throughout Washington state.
  • Last year, they distributed

o   More than 30 million pounds of food,

o   Which is 1.9 million meals a month.

  • All of the food and money collected at the Seahawks Tackle Hunger event will stay in Washington.

Thank you to all the APIA au pairs who now call WA their home and who donated a Sunday to this important cause with Northwest Harvest.

Salmon Days – October 2013

Au pairs from around the globe gathered to share in a very PNW event – Salmon Days in Issaquah!  We made new friends, did a bit of shopping and had a nice picnic with blue grass music after learning about the salmon life cycle… and with 70 degree October weather…nice!
