Ana Claudia, who works with our partner office in Brazil, is uniquely qualified to assess and advise prospective au pairs. Why? Before her current position, she was an au pair herself! In fact, many of our au pairs have such a positive experience that they go on to work for the program in their home countries. Why did Ana Claudia become an au pair, and how did cultural exchange impact her? Read on to find out:
Having the opportunity to know a new culture, improve my English and work with kids was the reason I decided to become an au pair in America. What I didn’t know was that I’d gain a lot more than that!
Being away from my home country made me a lot more open-minded and a lot more mature. I learned how to be flexible and respect different ways of doing things; and I learned how to love people that were raised differently or who have different values than me.
Living in the U.S. was like being in a movie for a while and I definitely felt free and safe there. I studied history and the arts, and that made a big difference in my life.
Besides the fact that I am now part of the Au Pair in America team and working with the program, one of the most important things that happened was I got a new family. My host family is absolutely a part of my life since the day we matched, and I know that we are bonded forever! Participating in the Au Pair in America Program was the best decision of my life.
