At Au Pair in America, we recruit au pairs from all over the world – in nearly 60 countries across six continents! Many families choose to host with us because of our massive pool of au pair candidates. But sometimes, families find their au pair from outside of our database. This is what we call an au pair “pre-match”.
So, What Exactly is an Au Pair Pre-Match?
A pre-match, sometimes also called a “direct placement”, is when a host family finds their au pair from outside of our database. Families approach agencies like Au Pair in America to facilitate the logistics of their au pair’s arrival and stay. Both the au pair and host family go through the same application process and pass the same screening requirements.
How Families and Au Pairs Pre-Match
Host families and au pairs can find each other online through Facebook groups, through relatives living abroad or via a mutual connection.
Is Pre-Matching Allowed?
Yes! Au Pair in America can accommodate families and au pairs who pre-match. We understand that families sometimes find their au pairs through personal connections, and we’re happy to work with you to make it happen. Both the au pair candidate and host family will still have to submit an application – the au pair through our satellite office or partner agency in their home country and the host family through our U.S. office.
Your candidate must meet the standard au pair requirements, including:
- 18 to 26 years old
- Candidate cannot be a relative of the host family
- 200 hours of recent child care experience verifiable with references and experience must be with non-family members
- A valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Pass a criminal background check
- Unmarried with no spouse or dependents
- Committed to spending a full year with your family in the United States
Your family will also need to meet the standard host family requirements.
What’s the Pre-Match Process?
First, your au pair candidate will need to apply to the Au Pair in America program. They will then need to go through an interview process, followed by a thorough screening and background check. The international applications team will then review their completed application. It can take approximately 10-12 weeks (or longer) until their application is approved. You will also need to go through the host family application process. Once both parties have applied and are accepted into the program, we can confirm your match and schedule your au pair’s arrival!
