Father’s Day is Sunday, June 18

Father’s Day is coming up on Sunday, June 18. If you are looking for gifts you can help your host children make, check out the Au Pair in America pinboard.   Father’s Day Ideas

Father’s Day was first celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910. But it wasn’t until 1972, that it became a nationwide holiday. Father’s Day is celebrated in countries all over the world on different days with a variety of different traditions.

This would be a great opportunity for au pairs to share if the holiday is celebrated in their country and how. If you want to try incorporating something new in your celebrations this year, here are some ways father’s day is celebrated in other countries.

  • Brazil – Families enjoy a traditional Brazilian barbecue together.
  • France – Children often spend the day outdoors with their father, enjoying activities like fishing and hiking.
  • Japan – Children write letters to their father’s expressing their love and gratitude.
  • Mexico – Families often attend mass together and enjoy a traditional meal.

Planning for Future Snow Days

Chances are good that we will see some snowy weather in the coming weeks and months. It’s a good idea to have ideas ready to keep the kids entertained on a snow day (when they are home from school for winter weather.)

Here is a simple snow day game plan…

  • Play in the snow.  Pro Tip:  Remind your kids go to the bathroom before you get them all bundled up to go outside.

  • Come inside and warm up with hot chocolate (don’t forget the marshmallows.) Pro Tip: Shake the snow off of the kids boots and snow clothes. Hang them up to dry or put them in the dryer, so they are ready for round 2 out in the snow.
  • Make your own play dough.

  • Play board games and/or legos together.
  • Play in the snow again.

  • Warm up inside and make paper snowflakes.

  • Bake cookies together or make some other fun recipe.
  • Make a blanket fort.

Stay warm & have fun!

November 24-30 is National Game and Puzzle Week

2175221420_2cf3f4bcc9_mMost children love to play games – ball games, card games, board games, word games, guessing games. Playing games is important because it helps children learn how to handle disappointment when they lose. It also helps them to learn to take turns and how to follow rules. Play their favorites or teach them a new game from your childhood.

Check out a selection of games from around the world HERE on the Global Awareness website.
