Au Pair in America celebrates International Exchange Day (IED) by donating 500 pairs for 500 shares.
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”…or just a few pairs of socks!
International Exchange Day is celebrated nationwide every year in August to highlight the power of international exchange and most specifically the impact that these programs have had on countless citizens in the United States. Traditionally, international exchange participants have come together with their American hosts to “eat, play, and give” — to share cultural diversity and American customs, to give back to their communities, and to have some fun.
This year for International Exchange Day (August 2nd), Au Pair in America will be throwing our 5th annual companywide sock drive!
Only, as our ability to hold events is limited in 2021, it will be a virtual experience! Our goal is to engage our community in the process — 500 pairs for 500 shares of a special International Exchange Day post on Instagram.
Socks are a great way to focus on what it might be like walking in someone else’s shoes, particularly those in need of footwear and socks all over the country. Socks also help us to remember that international exchange is a journey with many steps, twists and turns, hills and valleys. In years past, everyone came together and Au Pair in America was able to donate hundreds of pairs of shoes and socks! We plan to make an even bigger impact this year!
Au Pair in America will be donating these new socks to the Sock it To Em Campaign.
How Au Pairs Can Join the IED Celebration:
All members of the Au Pair in America community are invited to post and share their stories and experiences about walking into a new culture and their unique journey as an au pair.
Simply tag both @aupairinamerica and @theaupairinamerica on Instagram and use the hashtag #MyAPIAJourney

“Today is International Exchange Day and I wanted to talk about the experience of being and exchange student/au pair. Living abroad is not something easy, there are a lot of challenges that you have to face, but it is so much worth it. This passed 2 years have taught me so much, I’ve grown a lot as a person. The au pair program is a rollercoaster of emotions, you will face so much different feeling, happiness, joy, sadness, you will cry, you will laugh, make friend and families for life and most of all you will make unforgettable memories. During my experience I have met people from everywhere, United States, China, Russia, South Africa, France, Germany, Colombia, Argentina, Denmark, Thailand, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Canada, Greece, United Kingdom, Spain and so many others that I’ll forever remember. All those different people taught something different about their culture, about their country and this is so special. The Au Pair program gave me cultural knowledge, because this is what you get when you merge into a different culture and start living in a different country, you realize that there are much more than you’re own culture, that every country has theirs particularly and every country it’s special in their own way. This was for sure the best decision I have made to my life, besides all the challenges and difficult moments, my journey has been amazing and I’m thankful for all the opportunities this program gave it to me and for all the things I could achieve.”
